“I’ve had a glorious and productive day!” When I read this quote attributed to Charlie Adam, I chuckled out loud. Because that is just about how I remember him. And after I thought for a moment, I realized how inspiring it was to hear it. Thanks Charlie.
I had the pleasure of working for Charlie from 1986-88 while I was the Area Manager for Chevron Shipping Point Wells. Charlie was a good boss. I would see him just a few times a year since his office was in Richmond, and we always enjoyed his visits. He had a wealth of knowledge and experience and I don’t think he ever forgot a single thing he learned along the way.
I recall him joining our group for the Christmas party one year. He had memories to share with more than one of the seafarers, whether it was a time they had met aboard a ship, or how he recalled another one’s father who had sailed with the company. These were memories from 20+ years past but Charlie had quite a few details to lend veracityand amaze his listeners. His visits always included meetings with our customers in Marketing, or the industry. Charlie handled those events very well, in no small part because of the vast expertise he could share combined with his ability to provide practical solutions.
Charlie believed in enjoying a good meal when traveling and I recall our first dinner together at a small French restaurant in Edmonds. Looking over the menu, he recommended the cassoulet, which is nothing more than a french ‘pork and beans’ with some duck thrown in. A simple dish and new to us. It turned out to be the perfect meal for a chilly night, and we enjoyed it immensely as he regaled us with stories of living in Holland. So, on that ‘glorious and productive day’ we had a wonderful time together and Charlie successfully motivated a young employee and his wife for the greater glory of Chevron.
That is just how I remember himand I was blessed to know the man.
Please accept my condolences.
