DAVID SMITH Obituary

David Babcock Smith David was born in San Francisco June 28, 1947 and passed away in Sacramento August 26, 2016. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, George and Terry, and brothers Matthew and Daniel. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Susan Pinsker, siblings Michael, Jeffrey, Stephen, Margaret and Charlotte, and their spouses, as well as adoring nephews, nieces and their children, and the children of dear friends who grew up loving him as a cherished uncle. David grew up in Kentfield, California, where he was a paper boy for the Marin Independent Journal and graduated from Marin Catholic High School in 1965. He earned his B.A. from UC Davis and his Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of Massachusetts. For most of his professional life David was Clinical Director at the Berkshire County Jail and House of Correction in Pittsfield, Massachusetts where he supervised the mental health team and worked directly with inmates. David "Doc" Smith left a deep and lasting imprint on the quality of care and mental health services not just in the Berkshires but throughout the state of Massachusetts. He was a man of profound intellect and deeply held beliefs, whose quest for social and economic justice was visible in all he did. He was a person of boundless generosity and caring, always putting others first. Every person "The Gentle Giant" touched thanks him for making us better because we knew him. Donations in lieu of flowers may be sent to the Southern Poverty Law Center, the American Civil Liberties Union, or National Public Radio, all organizations that David valued and supported.

Susan, Colby and I got together for the first time in 35+ years last week and talked about you and David. So, I just googled you and found out this very sad news. Are you in CA? I am at the same address since the last time we visited. I'd love to hear from you. I'm so sorry- I have such warm memories of David. Much love, Christina Petersen

Dear Susan, I just found this while trying to locate David for his advice on a young man in trouble in the Berkshires. My heart sank. I really loved David, his joyful nature, honesty, convictions. He came into our kitchen with a tray of bluefish and a smile like a Cape Cod sun, and I felt such happiness. We shared deep experiences in our shared graduate years and I will always be grateful to him. Much love to you.' Barbara

Susan,

It saddened me deeply to hear of David's passing. I have lots of fond memories of good times and good friends with him. But most of all, I remember David as a principled man with enormous intellect and a sensitive soul who could always make me laugh with his quick, incisive wit. My thoughts are with you. lynne

It saddens me greatly to learn of David's death. His gigantic stature stood in startling contrast to his ballet-like grace when skiing in powder snow. My sincere condolences go out to Susan.

Susan,
As sad as I am, as we all are, at the loss of our dear friend, I find myself smiling every time I think of David - the antics, the deep discussions, the music, the fun that we all shared over the years. Am feeling so blessed to have had David in my world.
