George Dexter Obituary

George Harold Dexter Oct. 17, 1923 - June 7, 2012 George Dexter of Kentfield passed away at home on June 7, 2012 with his beloved wife, Jeri and family by his side. George made a toast to Jeri on New Year's Eve six months before they were married that read "I hope I can spend all the New Years I have left with you" - his toast and love for her prevailed. George will be sorely missed by his loving wife, Jeri, married for over 50 years; son, Greg Dexter and daughter-in-law, Melinda; daughter Diana Shima and son-in-law, Miki; adoring grandchildren, Laura Molina, Jeremy Shima and Cole Dexter and great-grand-daughter, Mariana Molina along with extended family and many friends. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Georjean Dexter and his sister, Betty Torre. Born in Marysville, Kansas, his family was hard hit by the effect of the Depression and George, after barely finishing 8th grade, had to go out and support himself doing odd jobs. He then entered the military serving in the Army as a paratrooper. This brought him west to California. After being discharged from the military, he worked as a salesman for a food brokerage company in San Francisco. He then decided to give the automobile business a try working as a salesman at a dealership on Van Ness Avenue in San Francisco. He worked hard earning many awards for his efforts. He moved to Marin County and bought his first automobile dealership there - Dexter Rambler located in San Rafael, California. His love of the car business grew and he bought several more dealerships earning the nickname "the King of Auto Row" and eventually became the largest auto dealer in Marin County. Besides Rambler he was a dealer for the following manufactures over his automobile career: Hillman, Volvo, Datsun (Nissan), Pontiac/GMC, Chevy, Cadillac, Oldsmobile, Toyota, Jaguar, Triumph, MG, Jensen, Excalibur, Lincoln, Mercury, BMW and Infiniti. He also operated Nicasio Valley Arabians breeding and raising Arabian horses; one in particular - Bey Shah became a National Champion. After his career in the auto business he was one who could never completely retire, he and Jeri owned and welcomed guests at Giorgio's Restaurant in Greenbrae. He also was committed to his community and supported many local charities. A man's man, George loved hunting, fishing and the great outdoors. His other great love was his family and friends. He loved adventures and fun-times and made sure that there were many with his family and friends. He also enjoyed a good laugh. We will miss his piercing blue eyes, his quick wit, his love, his generosity and his zest for life. You are in our hearts George. There will be a celebration of his life to be held at a later date. Contributions in his memory can be made to Hospice By the Bay, Marin Charitable, Timothy Murphy School for Boys, or charity of your choice.

Mrs. Dexter,
I only met you once, but your husband George was in our office often, on business and to visit, while I was working at Cal Land Title.
Our one personal meeting was a great pleasure. He was a delightful, down-to-earth man, and struck me as kind, knowledgeable, and very appreciative of my work. You were equally kind. It was gratifying to meet both of you (several years ago now).
I am saddened by the loss of such a great man, and wish all blessings to you and your extended family.
Respectfully, and with fond regards,
Jane E. Allyn

Jeri,George was like a tall ship sailing off to the horizon as we on the near shore watched. He's gone.Gone where?Tothe other side is all.For then a great cry went up from all his family and friends on the far shore "Here he comes. He's coming home."

Dear Jeri and family,
Please accept my heartfelt condolences for your loss. I know how much my parents treasure your friendship and what fond memories they have of spending time with you and your beloved husband, George. As a girl, I remember going to your ranch with my family and spending time exploring nature, swinging on the tree swing, and picnicking amongst your family and friends. I will always remember George as being so kind and full of life.
Fondly,
Lisa Cicurel-Jones

What a good life you and George had together, Jeri. I'm so sad that he's gone, but I'm grateful to have met him. I remember your grand old yella Lab, Bo, such a wonderful dog, so right for George, except for Bo had those big brown eyes instead of George's handsome sky-blue twinkling eyes. Take good care of yourself, Jeri. A lot of people's thoughts are with you.
