James Garrett Obituary

Dr. James Joseph Garrett May 17, 1931- July 30, 2017 Dr. Garrett passed away peacefully in Tiburon with his loved ones at his side. He is survived by his loving wife, Alice, his three sons James, Mitchell and Cameron and by his favorite daughter, Dana. Jim will be especially missed by his five grandchildren, Andrew, Hilary, Theodore, Ross and Joseph Garrett. As one of ten siblings growing up in the post Depression era of rural Colorado, Jim persevered in his quest to attend college. After his family moved to Vallejo, California, Jim was accepted at the University of California at Berkeley and subsequently studied dentistry at the University of California School of Dentistry in San Francisco. After six years of service as a dentist in the United States Army (Presidio), Jim established a dental practice in Corte Madera and he remained in that practice for over thirty years. Eventually, he was joined in his dental practice by his sons, James and Cameron and Cameron has remained there to the present. Jim was an avid golfer and skier until just a few years ago. A longstanding member of the Meadow Club in Fairfax, Jim golfed regularly with his sons until he wore them out ! It was common for Jim to average close to 300 days a year golfing at Meadow Club and skiing the diamond slopes at Squaw Valley and this continued into his late seventies! Unfortunately, Jim's athletic career was cut short by severe arthritis and knee joint replacement a few years ago. James Garrett will be fondly remembered as a most affable, albeit intellectual man, who was quick to laugh, reluctant to disparage and honest almost to a fault. Dr. Garrett's life and legacy will be honored and celebrated at St. Anselm's church in Ross at 11a.m. Saturday, August 26. Assisted by Monte's Chapel of the Hills San Anselmo, CA

I so enjoyed having Jim as a father-in-law, and post-divorce, he was also a great father-out-law. He was a bright spirit and positive force and I consider him a role model for how to age with elan. Additionally, he was very active in my son, Theo's, care as he grew, which allowed them to form a loving bond that not all grandparents have with their grandchildren. We've been calling him Papa for so many years now, it seems like he was born with that name.

I hope you're enjoying carving esses on the slopes of heaven and hitting holes-in-one on a daily basis.

You are well loved, Papa!

Jimmy Lee and I were a handful back in the 70's, however, Jim never criticized or tried to change us in anyway. He was always so kind and accepting of our shortcomings - regardless
of the situation.

Doctor Dad - you will be sorely missed.
