Laurence Friedman Obituary

Laurence (Larry) Friedman, MD Aug. 31, 1935 - Oct. 7, 2016 Laurence "Larry" Friedman of San Rafael, CA, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 7, 2016 at Marin General Hospital with his loving family at his side after a long and courageous battle with congestive heart failure, always with an optimistic attitude toward recovery. Larry was born August 31, 1935 in The Bronx, NY, to parents Harry Friedman and Mae Cohen. He graduated Stuyvesant High School in Manhattan and then went on to his "alma mater," the University of Michigan. He graduated New York Medical College, where he was a member of A.O.A. (Honor Society), completing his residency in Internal Medicine specializing in Hematology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He then served as Captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps (43rd MASH, Korea). He practiced internal medicine in Greenbrae for almost 40 years. Upon retirement, Larry continued to practice as Medical Director of Villa Marin Retirement Center in Terra Linda. He was active in the Marin County Medical Society (CMA delegate) and an Assistant Clinical Professor at UC San Francisco. He was a dedicated and compassionate physician, respected by all who knew him. Larry is survived by his beloved wife Marilyn of 51 years, loving children Linda (Eric Cohen) and David, adoring grandsons Benn and Joss Cohen, brother Michael (Joan), brother Richard (Tanya), many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, cousins and his German Wirehaired Pointer "Cookie," always close to his heart. Larry was a great outdoorsman. He loved tennis (former Marin Tennis Club member), skiing (where he met his wife Marilyn) and golfing. He was an active member of Mount Tamalpais Fly Fishers, Golden Gate Angling & Casting Club, Trout Unlimited, Jordano's Pheasant Club and SIRS (Sons in Retirement). He loved hanging out at the McInnis dog park with his many friends. Larry will live forever in our hearts. The family wishes to express their gratitude for the expert medical care and compassion he received at UCSF Medical Center and Marin General Hospital. Private burial was held at Mount Tamalpais Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service at Congregation Rodef Sholom (170 N San Pedro Road, San Rafael) at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, October 26. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Heart Association or Guide Dogs for the Blind.

I got to know Larry as a customer when I managed Western Sport Shop. Our mutual love of "Fuzzy Dogs" created a friendship at Black Point Gamebird club and Larry was gracious in inviting me and my wirehair Blitz to share a day in the field at Jordano's.Now both Larry and Blitz are gone but the pure delight of that day are as clear in my mind as though it were yesterday.God Bless

I met Larry soon after moving to Terra Linda in 1958 through Richard Rosenberg, who I was attending night law school with at Golden Gate Univ., San Francisco. Also, the late Hille Abel MD, a friend and classmate at Lowell High School, was a partner in his practice. My wife Judy O'Connor worked as a nurse for Dr. Able in his office for several years in the mid 1980s. Also I played tennis with Larry at the Marin Tennis Club.
The last time I saw Larry was last year at Fil and Judy Rodich's 60th Wedding Anniversary 5-3-2015 at Servino's, Tiburon, and took a photo of Larry and Marilyn.
Our hearts go out to Marilyn and their family for the loss. Larry was a really nice guy and good friend.
God Bless, Rick Bradley & Judy O'Connor

Larry and I had a memorable day fly fishing The Land of the Giants
section of the Missouri River two summers ago. A very productive but seldom fished section because a power boat is needed for access, We stumbled upon a guide with a jet boat who took us on our adventure. We caught many fish all morning but as often happens things slowed in the afternoon. That is until Larry had every fisherman's dream, he hooked The Big One. The fight lasted about three quarters of an hour. Larry held on as the big fish spooled him, i.e. ran out the line on the reel. The guide chased the big fish up stream with the boat. Eventually the fish buried in some tules and broke off. That is how smart fish become big fish.
Larry had a smile from ear to ear the rest of the fishing trip and delighted retelling the story to the Mt Tam Fly Fishing Club at the next meeting.

I met Dr. Friedman at the German Wirehaired Pointer show in Carson City several years ago. He was gracious enough to give me & my friend a ride to the show dinner in Reno that weekend . We had several great chats, about dogs of course, during the days of the show. He certainly loved his Wirehairs & it was a pleasure to meet such an avid dog enthusiast, also such a gentleman.
