Phillip Wilkinson Obituary

Phillip Herbert Wilkinson A Drake High graduate of the class of 1973, was killed in a traffic accident on the island of Bohol in the Philippines on Christmas Day. Phillip attended St. Anselm's grammar school where he participated in CYO basketball and sang in the choir. At Drake High School he played football as a running back and also played basketball and ran track. Following graduation he served in the United States Navy and upon being discharged spent many years tending bar at several establishments in Marin County. He had an avid interest in sports memorabilia and worked for a period of time at a Memorabilia store in San Rafael. Later in life he worked for Medtronics in Santa Rosa and when they cut back on their work force he moved to Los Angeles. There he became a cab driver and drove cab for many years, spending six months in L.A. and then the next six months or so on the Island of Bohol in the Philippines in semi- retirement. He had a wonderful group of friends on that island and, in truth, had a second family with John and Cristy Green to whom a debt of gratitude is owed for all that they did in arranging for funeral services there and getting the body returned to San Francisco. On Christmas Day, Phillip was at a family party with them at a local restaurant on Bohol and on the way home was in the accident that took his life. He had planned on being in Petaluma on January 12th to celebrate his 60th birthday. He leaves his parents, Bill and Ana Maria Wilkinson of Petaluma, his siblings David Wilkinson (Susan) of San Rafael, Joseph Wilkinson (Sally) of Maui, Maria Stranzl (Frank) of Petaluma, Nita Robinson (Brian) of Novato, Elena Dibble (Dave) of Petaluma, his uncles Rick (Jeannie) and George (Cecilia) of Soledad, California, and Ed (Mary) of San Anselmo, his aunt Concha (Johnny) of Burlingame, plus numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. There will be a Memorial Mass at St. James Catholic Church, 125 Sonoma Mt. Parkway, Petaluma, Saturday, January 31st at 11:00 A.M. Contributions to C.O.T.s in lieu of flowers would be appreciated. The Committee on the Shelterless mailing address is: P.O. Box 2744, Petaluma, CA.

I knew Phil well at Drake in the 70's as we endured football and laughed with Coach Lazz and Coach Fran. Phil was always a thoughtful, kind guy with of course, the big smile. Phenomenal athlete in all sports and very fast! I lost touch after high school as many of us went on our life journeys. I hope Phil enjoyed his journey. Condolences to his family .
