Sophia Katherine (Kapellas) Eliopoulos September 9, 1937 October 16, 2021 Sophia Katherine (Kapellas) Eliopoulos, 84, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her daughters and her favorite canine companion, Daisy, on October 16, 2021. Sophia's parents emigrated from Greece. She was born September 9, 1937 in La Crosse, Wisconsin. While visiting her sister in the Bay Area, she met her loving husband, Paul. They married in San Francisco on August 17, 1963, settled in San Rafael, and shared 54 beautiful years together raising their two daughters. Active throughout her life in the Greek community, Sophia was a devoted member of the Greek Orthodox Church and Daughters of Penelope EOS #1. Sophia worked for 30 years at the County of Marin in the Tax Collectors Office. When asked what she did for a living she would answer, "I collect your property taxes with a smile." She is preceded in death by her husband, Paul G. Eliopoulos, her parents and her sister, Irene Margelos. She is survived by her daughters, Mary Kay Stratigos (Spiro) and their children Niko and Sophia, and Irene Starling (Eric), their children Alex, James, and Alena; her brother Tom Kapellas (Sandy) and sister-in-law Garifalia (Eliopoulos) Zeissig; and many nieces and nephews. Sophia will be remembered for her generosity, warm hospitality, beautiful smile, and love of family. Being a "Yiayia" to her five grandchildren brought her much joy. Her house was always the place to gather and socialize. Friends and family are invited to Trisagion Services on Monday, October 25, 2021 at 7:00 p.m.; and Funeral Service on Tuesday, October 26, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. All services will take place at the Nativity of Christ Greek Orthodox Church, located at 1110 Highland Drive in Novato. Interment will be at Valley Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Nativity of Christ Church in memory of Sophia.
