Ursula Deuster Obituary

A longtime resident of Sausalito, Ursula Hildegard Deuster, passed away on Saturday, August 19. She was surrounded at home by her family, her beloved cat Monee, in her own bed, and passed peacefully. Ursula was born in the small Bavarian village of Bad Reichenhall, next door to Salzburg, Austria, on May 11, 1943. She was the youngest daughter of Mathias and Louise Deuster. Ursula grew up in Munich, Germany with her older brother Peter, and her older sister Elisabeth. Although, or perhaps because, she was the youngest, Ursula was very determined, and followed her mother's advice to never rely on anyone else to take care of her. When she was in her early 20's, she left her home in Germany and followed her sister to America. She settled in San Francisco for a time, then moved to Atlanta, Georgia, before finally settling for good in Sausalito. Here in America she found her calling in accounting, working as a book keeper, or controller, for various retailers and hotels, including the Cathedral Hill Hotel in San Francisco. This profession also took her to St. Petersburg, Russia for a year as she sowed her traveling oats and zest for adventure. While in Sausalito, Ursula spent a lot of time volunteering for everything from Star of the Sea functions, to the Sausalito Art Festival, the Marin Humane shelter, the Marin Agricultural Land Trust, and many other organizations that were important to her and the community. She also cared for a lot of friends when they were in time of need, always insisting on helping, while declining anything in return. Ursula and her witty sense of humor will be missed by her sister Lis, her nephews Mike and Rick, and her friends and neighbors from Sausalito. In lieu of flowers, please send a donation to one of the organizations mentioned above, in her memory.
