Dean Cusick Obituary

Dean Edward Cusick

Marion - Dean Edward Cusick, a hardworking man, passed away Monday, October 15, 2018 at Heartland of Marion. Dean was 93 years old and a lifelong resident of the Marion area.

Born April 26, 1925 in Marion to the late Leo J. and Clara M. (Zink) Cusick, Dean attended Pleasant School where he graduated in 1944. While in school, Dean met Hazel Lehner, his lifelong love. The two were wed on January 25, 1947 at St. Peter's Church in Mansfield, Ohio. Shortly after the wedding, they started their lives together in Marion.

In his younger years, Dean worked for a machine shop in Mount Gilead. After a few years, he joined his brother Cork to jointly farm properties in Marion, Delaware, and Morrow Counties. Together they raised row crops; Dean also independently operated a dairy farm, of which he was quite proud. When he retired from farming, the farms were sold and he built his dream house on a portion of the original family farm in Pleasant Township; the house was built on a spot Dean had identified from childhood as his dream location. His double A-Frame house had a large workshop where he could often be found making furniture for his family and wooden toys for the grandchildren. After retiring from farming, Dean spent many years working as a driver for Pfeiffer Marathon Oil.

Dean will be missed by Hazel, his loving wife of 71 years. The two raised a family of six, which has expanded to now include ten grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. One highlight of Dean and Hazel's life together was their 50th Anniversary trip to Ireland, where they kissed the Blarney Stone and visited the countryside -- including a Cusack's Pub.

Dean was a man of deep faith and a lifelong member of St. Mary Church in Marion. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, and enjoyed playing in the Knights of Columbus Golf League.

Dean is survived by his loving wife of 71 years, Hazel; children, Stephen D. (Julie) Cusick of Kokomo, Indiana, Keith E. (Julie) Cusick of Morral, Michael J. (Patti) Cusick of Marion, Debra M. (Larry) Krissek of Ostrander, and Sara J. (Tim) Dorsey of Sebastian, Florida; grandchildren, Colleen (Shane) Hively, Heather (Michael) Mygrant, Cassie (Jessie) Lehnhart, Carrie Ann Cusick, Shane (Heather) Cusick, Bryan (Nepunee) Cusick, Lori (Brian) Wilson, Jennifer (Anthony) Toops, Patrick Krissek, and Alex Dorsey; great-grandchildren, Caden, Carson, Sheppard, Summit, Isaiah, Lexie, Lenny, Dominic, Caleb, Colin, and Cora; brother, Robert "Cork" Cusick; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Dean was preceded in death by his parents; son, Terrence L. "Terry" Cusick; and siblings, Dick, Jim, and John Cusick, Kathryn Sens, Rosemary "Pat" Figerell, Rose Marie Granger, Jane Simpson, Lucille Cusick, and Mary McGinnis.

Visitation will be held at Snyder Funeral Homes, GUNDER/HALL Chapel on Sunday, October 21, 2018 from 2 until 4 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, October 22, 2018 at 10 am at St. Mary Church, Marion, with Father Ryan Schmit presiding. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery in the Cusick Lot.

We moved into the white ranch two doors down from Dean and Hazel's A frame in 1997 where we raised our young family. Both were wonderful neighbors who aways waved hello and often stopped to chat. Dean told us the history of our house, (it was one of the original homes built by one of the Cusick sisters and her husband.) I love our home, and love the fact that it was part of a family homestead. Dean and Hazel gave us a tour of their A frame once, and it was so beautiful. As he talked of building the home, I could hear the pride in his voice. He was also really proud of his work shop and kidded how he lost the tip of a couple fingers over the years. He told us many stories over the years that we knew him. He was so amiable and charming. Both my husband and I enjoyed every minute of those chats. I would see Hazel walk the "Country Block" almost everyday until they moved. She would walk it rain or shine, hot or cold, only missing in the most extreme weather. I admired that about her. Dean would often practice his swing on the green that he had built on his property. One time he tried to make a shot and his ball flew over into our back yard. When he came to retrieve it, my husband and he talked about their love of the game and how skilled they both were at golf, as men often do. I was really sad when the new owners took that green out. Dean and Hazel were the epitome of "good people." When my daughter sold for Pleasant fundraisers or for cheerleading, we could always count on Hazel to support whatever the cause. My daughter and I would stop in and sit with her and chat for an hour over cookies and refreshments. I enjoyed her company very much. My husband and I were really sad when they downsized and moved. I still think of them every time I look down the drive at the A frame, and when I walk the road like Hazel did for so many years. I loved them both. I also admired their love for each other and the family that they had. Our deepest sympathy goes out to all of the Cusick family.
