Herbert Conley Obituary

Herbert A. "Doc" Conley

MARION: Herbert A. "Doc" Conley, age 84, of Marion passed away on Monday, January 20, 2014 at 11:15 p.m. in the Costal Carolina Hospital, Hardeeville, South Carolina after suffering a fall.

"Doc" was born June 12, 1929 in Salyersville, Kentucky to the late Dona and Maude Conley. On February 26, 1950 in Kimberly, Ohio he married Velma Mae Garner. She preceded him in death on May 14, 1993 in Marion.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Earnest, Edgar, & Marvin; along with two sister, Louise and Alberta.

He is survived by his three sons, Terry (Anne), Tim (Lisa) and Rickie Conley; and daughter, Rita (Craig) Grimes all of Marion. Also surviving are three brothers, Guy of Enon, OH., Ray of Marion and Arby of Salyersville, KY.; three sisters, Juanita Litteral of Salyersville, KY., Darlene Gevedon of Dayton, OH., and Opal Jean Howard of Newark, OH.; nine grandchildren; four great grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Herbert came to Marion to work for the Erie-Lackawanna Railroad and then worked for 28 years at Tecumseh Products until it closed in 1984. He then worked as a custodian for the Marion City Schools, a job he truly enjoyed and retired from in 2010 after 14 years of service. He greatly respected the teachers and administrators and was selected as an "Exemplary Classified Employee" for the Marion City Schools in July, 1998. "Doc" was an avid pool player and enjoyed competing in tournaments at the Marion Senior Center. He won several tournaments and was willing to accept a challenge from anyone interested in a lesson on how to play pool. He loved to hunt, fish, and garden. Even though he lived alone he would plant, maintain, and harvest gardens with thousands of vegetable plants. He loved sharing the vegetables with his family, friends, neighbors, co-workers, and anyone else who could use the vegetables. He also loved to meet with friends at the Marion Senior Center, the Marion Mall, and various restaurants. He was a great story teller with a quick wit and good sense of humor.

The family will meet with friends from 2:00 - 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 26, 2014, at the Boyd-Born Funeral Home. Reverend Russell Howard will officiate the service at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, January 27, 2014, at the funeral home. Burial will follow in the Grand Prairie Cemetery, Marion County, Ohio.

Dear Terry, Ann and family, Bill and I are so sorry to hear of your papa's passing. Our love and prayers are with you and your family.
I had the pleasure of working with Herb in the Marion City Schools. He was always so helpful, kind and sweet. He made your day turn joyous if you were having a bad day because he could see goodness in everyone and everything. We would see him often with friends and alone when we were out and away from work. Herb would visit Bill at our garage either to have his van looked at or just to visit and stay a while.
We will miss you dear man because just your presence and that beautiful smile made us happy and warmed our hearts. Thank you Lord and family for sharing such a wonderful man with all of us. Love and Prayers, Bill and Olieva Huntsman
