Leo Lofland Obituary

Lofland, Dr. Leo James "Sonny'

Dr. Leo James "Sonny" Lofland, 73, Ogema, died in the Kindred Hospital in Milwaukee, Wis., on Friday, June 7, 2013. He was born in Owen, Wis., on December 15, 1939, the son of Wilmer and Marie Lofland. He was a graduate of the Leavenworth High School in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, received his Bachelor's Degree in Ecosystems Analysis from UW-Green Bay, and his MD from UW-Madison. He was married to Celine Geiger on August 19, 1967, in Abbotsford, Wis. He served his country in the United Stateas Army from 1957 to 1961, which included service in the 101st Airborne. He then served with the Abbotsford Army National Guard from 1966 to 1977. He was attached to the 724 Engineers and served during the Berlin Crisis, stationed in Fort Lewis, Wash. He served the community as a physician at the Prentice Medical Clinic until the time of his retirement. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church of Prentice and of the National Rifle Association. In his free time he enjoyed hunting, fishing, reading, canoeing, and camping.

He is survived by his wife, Celine; by one son, Derek, Chicago, Ill.; by one daughter, April (Chad) Sutkay, Milwaukee, Wis.; by two grandchildren, Vienna Christine Sutkay and Violet Leora Sutkay; by his mother, Marie Lofland; by two sisters, Kathy Severance, Clearwater, Fla.; and Linda Weems, Denver, Colo/; and by two brothers, John (Barbara) Lofland, Tampa, Fla.; and Tom (Jill) Lofland, Palm Harbor, Fla. He is preceded in death by his father, Wilmer D. Lofland, his daughter, Mary Clara; and by his grandparents, Leo and Helen Bauer.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 15, at St. John The Baptist Catholic Church in Prentice with Father Gerald Hagen celebrating the Funeral Mass. Military Honors will be conducted by the Southern Price County VFW Post No. 8491. Friends may call at the Prentice High School on Friday evening from 4 to 8 p.m. for a visitation and on Saturday at the Catholic Church from noon until the time of services.

The family suggests that memorials take the form of a donation to Rib Lake Hope Hospice or the National Rifle Association.

The Heindl Funeral Home in Prentice is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.

He was a great doctor. He took away my pain, he delivered my son, and he listened and helped when life got too hard to handle. We were lucky to have him in our community. Thanks Celine for sharing Doc with us.

I worked with Dr. Lofland at Medford Memorial. He was a wonderfully funny and caring man. He will be truly missed.
