SOMERSET — Ronald M. Combs, 87, of Somerset, Kentucky died at home on Tuesday Jan. 9, 2023.
He was born on Feb. 27, 1935, in Maysville to the late Beatrice M. Combs and Curtis H. Combs.
Ron attended Maysville High School and graduated in 1953.
He played trombone in the Maysville High School band.
Ron was employed as a salesman at January and Wood, a cotton mill.
Ron was very active in working to improve the city of Maysville. He was a member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce for 18 years, one of which he was the president and was named 'outstanding young man of the year' in 1966. In 1976 he was given the key to the city.
Ron was active in sports and played softball on the January and Wood team in 1978. He was president of the first 'fast pitch' softball league aptly named the 'Maysville Softball Team'.
Ron was a long time member of the Church of the Nativity, where he served as the junior warden and then senior warden and he was the 'Master of Acolytes' there.
Ron and his family moved to Danville, Kentucky in January 1977, where he had a franchise with 'Tom's' potato chip business.
In July 1993, Ron and his family moved to Somerset, Kentucky.
Ron was much loved and was known for his integrity and for being a man of strong character.
Ron is survived by his wife Nancy Austin Combs, two sons Andy (Julie) Combs of Frankfort, Kentucky and Christopher Combs of Somerset; two granddaughters and two great grand children.
He also leaves behind one brother, Larry Combs of Maysville and two sisters, Helen Combs and Dottie Adair both of Maysville; two special sisters-in-law Alice Kay Gallenstein of Maysville and Barbara Combs of San Antonio, Texas; and several nieces and nephews.
Ron was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Donald Combs, Gene Comb and Johnnie Combs and a nephew, Larry E. Rice.
Funeral arrangements will be made by Somerset Undertaking.
Funeral service and internment of the ashes will be at the Saint Patrick Episcopal Church of Somerset, with Rev. Chris Brannock conducting the services.
Visitation will be Saturday Jan. 14, 2023, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. with the service immediately following.
A Reception will follow in the Parish Hall.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be given to the Hospice of Lake Cumberland and or to Saint Patrick's Episcopal Church in Somerset.
