Daniel E. Chick Best, 94, formerly of Bethlehem, passed away January 16, 2005, in Westminster Village Atria, Allentown. He was the husband of the late Ida (Warg) Best, who died in 2003. Born in Stanhope, N.J., he was the son of the late James F. Sr. and Gilbretta (Davis) Best. He was a 1928 graduate of Netcong (N.J.) High School and received his bachelors degree in metallurgical engineering in 1932 from Lehigh University, where he was class officer, vice president and president for 57 years, a member of the Lehigh University Alumni Society and a former basketball player. He received three Lehigh Awards, The Joseph R. Persa 48 Award in 1982, presented to an individual who has made the greatest contribution to an outstanding class reunion, and the Back Every Year Club Award for faithful attendance at yearly reunions. Chick retired in 1975 as a superintendent of foundries for Bethlehem Steel Corp. after 42 and years. He had one patent. He was a member of the American Foundry Mens Society for 60 years, where he served on the board of directors of the Philadelphia Chapter, as chairman in 1951 and as national director and regional vice president, 1961-1964. He was a member of the Lehigh Valley Foundry Mens Society. He was a member of Salem Lutheran Church, where he served six times on the church council as president, vice president, treasurer and member of the finance committee, and assisted with the Altar Guild. In addition, he organized and supervised the churchs blood bank for approximately 15 years. He was a former member of the Saucon Valley Country Club, Bethlehem Steel Club board of directors, 1950-1951, was active in the Lehigh Valley Safety Council and had spoken in Chicago, Ill. Survivors: Son, David W. and his wife Mary Lou of Bethlehem Township; granddaughter, Kristie, wife of Michael Stickler, and their son Michael David of Bethlehem Township. He was preceded in death by a brother, James F. Jr., and a sister, Elizabeth Best Johanson. Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, Long Funeral Home, 500 Linden St., Bethlehem. Call 7-9 p.m. Wednesday and 10-11 a.m. Thursday in the funeral home. Contributions: Salem Lutheran Church, 537 High St., Bethlehem 18017.
