David Johnstone Obituary

David G. Johnstone
1930 - 2014
It is with deep sadness that the Johnstone family announces the passing of their father, David Gordon Johnstone. In burial he joins his beloved wife Barbara Johnstone, who pre-deceased him May 5, 2009 in Boise, Idaho. David passed away peacefully on April 18, 2014 following a fractured hip and pneumonia in Garnerville, Nevada.
David was born on March 30, 1930 in Santa Clara to Quintin Chesley Johnstone and (Marie) Lillian Antoinette LeMoyne (LeMoine). They emigrated from Ottawa, Canada in the early 1920s and became citizens in 1956 and 1976 respectively. David attended the local Santa Clara Valley public schools and graduated from Bellarmine College Preparatory.
His teenage years were spent working under his father's supervision in the First Security Storage and Warehouse in San Jose which received fruits from local growers, stored them in pre-cooling rooms and shipped them to the eastern U.S. markets.
In 1948 David joined the US Navy, where he was assigned to U.S.S Missouri. With a medical discharge due to TB in 1956, he returned to Santa Clara Valley. David met and married Helen Rees, adopted LaDonna and had four additional children, David H., Denise, Dana and Dale. They were married for 8 years in the San Jose area.
While working at Hewlett Packard, David met and subsequently married Barbara Hixon in 1963. They had two boys, Timothy and Mark and were married 46 years.
David enjoyed a successful 30-year career at Hewlett Packard during which he rose to become a Division manager. Initially working at the San Jose facility, In 1979, he moved Barbara and their sons to Boise, Idaho. David gained much respect from his friends that he had at HP and was considered the John Wayne of leaders.
In 2009, after wife Barbara's passing, David moved to Gardnerville, NV to "to throw a fishing line out the front door"
An enthusiastic sportsman coming from a long line of Canadian top sportsmen, outdoor living was a passion. Fishing, hunting, trap and game shooting, golfing and camping were all top on his list which he shared with his family. Cars, especially Austin Healey's, were also a favorite past time. David was also involved in several bowling leagues over his life time and held a regular average in the 230's.
David was a man of determination with a wonderful sense of humor and a real sense of adventure. It's hard to imagine life without David here with us. We will all miss him very much. But we have many, many happy memories!
David is survived by two daughters, LaDonna Gedecke of San Jose, CA and Denise Johnson of Campbell, CA; four sons, David and wife Kim of Rocklin, CA, Dale and wife Tami of Gardnerville, NV, Timothy, Mark and wife Sonja of Boise, ID; David also had 7 grandchildren; Steven, Kevin, Kelly and Whitney of California, Brandon Bryson and Trevor of Nevada.

Uncle David had a wonderful fun loving adventure seeking way about him. He was always an active person - hunting, fishing, camping, and later on bowling. And then there is the Austin Healys.....Such good memories.

David Johnstone, or Mr. Johnstone as I called him for so many years was a great person and a great father to two of my very good life long and close friends Mark and Tim. Along with "Mrs. Johnstone" they were amazing parents and I so enjoyed hanging out at their house all of those years ago. Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire family.

God bless you and your family. I've heard wonderful things about both Mr. and Mrs. Johnstone and I know two of their sons and how wonderful they are. May you rest with the Lord in peace forever.

I was privileged to grow up next door to Dave, Barb, Tim and Mark. He was part of the "Tracy Gang", part of a big family. It wasn't until I was older that I realized how lucky I was. I remember your Dad at our Sunday Champagne brunches making a farmer's breakfast, laughing and joking. He was a great person to have next door growing up and an even better friend. He will be missed, but I know he leaves me, and many others, as better people for having had him in our lives. My deepest sympathies on your loss.

My Brother, I can feel your lost. My hero left this world for a better place just over a year ago. Although maybe our circumstance are never the same, we both still lost our hero. The one that brought us into the world, showed us the world, and the first one we knew that seem to know the world. Wisdom came from our hero, we often wondered how did they know? That was their superpowers in actions, we could not even begin to know their insight or their special powers altogether. All I know is now mine is gone and I would give anything to hear him say anything, wise or even obscure. I know that if my father could spend one last time with me, say anything, it wouldn't be about his special powers, it would be that he loved me, and that is what we do have in common because your father would tell you that same thing, tears, this is something we share because I know that you and I would like to have one more conversation with them. Your father and my father made two fine young gentleman, who became brothers, I could never stop being your brother and I love you always. I have never been fishing but if I had to go it would be with you. I love you Mark, thanks for being my brother, Im sorry for your lost.

I am so sorry to hear the news. David was a wonderful man, him and Barbara always treated me like another son as I have always thought of them as another set of parents. I have thought of him often over the years and he will be missed. Unfortunately I will miss the ceremony but my thoughts a prayers are with him and his family.

Condolences from the Johstone/Zinola Clan. Uncle David always had a ready smile and deep chuckle that made you smile in spite of yourself. I remember the fun parties he would host in the backyard. I will be arriving Thursday afternoon and leaving right after the service.
