David Van Brakle Obituary

Reverend David Smith Van Brakle, 40, of Lawrenceville, N.J. passed away February 8, 2023 in his home. He and his wife, Erica R. (Ashburn) Van Brakle shared 15 years of marriage and the joy of raising two sons, Ethan (11) and William (8).

Born in Silver Spring, MD, he was the son of John D. Van Brakle of Allentown, PA and the late Debra Lin (Smith) Van Brakle. David was a graduate of Parkland High School (2000), Eastern University (2004) and Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School (2007). He was in the process of obtaining his Doctor of Ministry from Fuller Theological Seminary. Most recently, David served as the Associate Regional Pastor for the American Baptist Churches of New Jersey. Previously, he served in Saginaw (MI), Syracuse (NY), and Wilmette (IL). Additionally, David participated in the congregational care of church members and nurturing the spiritual gifts of others in his childhood congregation of Calvary Baptist Church in Allentown, PA.

In each community David became a part of, he focused on what was needed and necessary for the success and improvement of the community's faith and well-being. He will be deeply missed by those he left behind including: his wife, Erica; sons, Ethan and William; Father, John; Sister, Mollee, her husband, John and their daughters, Adylin, Poppy and Jane; and his brothers and sisters in Christ.

Ours hearts grieve his untimely death.

We just heard about David's untimely passing - just today on Easter - so sad - he was our Assistant Minister here at Dewitt Community Church in Syracuse - and he was the best Minister we had ever experienced - being so very friendly and personable -- when he left here for a church in Illinois -- we knew he would do well where he was headed, but we knew we all were losing a great Minister. Our thoughts and prayers will be with Erica and her sons always.

Dear family members I am so very very sorry to hear David passed. It is so unfortunate that he just lost his mother. You are surely in my thoughts and prayers. I can't imagine what you are going through.

David was pastor of Michigan Avenue Baptist Church in Saginaw, Michigan where we have attended our entire lives. He was wonderful, spiritual and full of life. We were very sad when he left but knew he would be great wherever he went. Our deepest condolences to your family Erica. It is devastating news. You are all in our prayers.

The first person to welcome me to Parkland. We were hoping to hang out soon. Shame, he was a great man and a great friend. Always willing to help or just be there for you. The world is lesser place without him. RIP my friend.

Truly, a man of God in every meaning of the word. Whether he was being a friend, LGBT advocate, colleague, pastor, minister, or whatever other role, he did it fully and shined with the reflection of Jesus himself. There is a nationwide group of pastors and church nerds who grew to love him (or love him more) in Christian-family video calls throughout the pandemic, as just the latest small example of how he touched lives in a positive way. The world, and God's kindom in it, is much poorer in his absence.

Sending love to your family. We lived across the street from David and his family in Allentown. He had a hard of gold and was the most polite child I had ever met. He was so patient and kind to my three sons. So sorry for your loss
