Edward Ciecko Obituary

Dr. Edward John Paul Ciecko, DO, 62, of Philadelphia, died of natural causes on Monday, July 12, 2021. Born June 14, 1959, in Philadelphia, he was a son of the late Edward J. and Anne C. (Plucinsky) Ciecko. Ed had a private medical practice in Northeast Philadelphia for many years, where he embodied the principles of an old-time family doctor. He was exceedingly generous with his care, paying particular attention to each patient and many friends who depended upon him for advice. He was a member of Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church, Northampton. A kind and devoted son, brother, friend, and doctor, Ed was known for his ability to bring a smile to any situation. He channeled his creativity and wit through gifts, gags, and delicious feasts to make gatherings of friends and family exceptional. As a Holy Ghost Prep student, he volunteered at the Mutter Museum and later earned his degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1985. He was a patron of the arts and a dedicated physician who was never too busy to answer a call for help. Survived by his brother, Dr. Joseph Ciecko; sisters, Anne Ciecko (Rahul) and Patrice Steck (Joseph); nieces, Alaina and Alycia; special friend, Mary Mulholland; and beloved dogs, Pax, Mier, and Pohoda. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, July 17 at 11:00 a.m. in the church, 22nd & Washington Ave., Northampton. Family and friends may call Friday night from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and Saturday morning from 9:15 to 10:15 a.m. in the Reichel Funeral Home, 326 E. 21st St., Northampton. I called the office today and was shocked to learn of Dr. Ciecko passing. He was my PCP for well over 30 years, having first met when he came to Dr. Zemble practice. My condolences to his family and staff. He helped me with several ailments over the years, but he always helped me manage my wellness in good health. I will probably never find a doctor who listens and carefully communicates like he did. I hope he learns how to fix angels wings in heaven.

Ed was the most extraordinary of friends: caring, wise, ready at the drop of a hat night or day to come to your aid, never too busy to help in any way, whether you asked him or he intuited your need. And or course he had the most amazing sense of humor, and a love and appreciation of animals and all of nature, including knowing where to recycle just about anything. To read all the tributes from his patients, it is not surprising to learn that he was that kind of friend to all who came under his medical care as well. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him, but we are all blessed to have had the privilege of knowing him -- as friend, patient, family -- during time here on earth.

Ed was every bit the person described in his obituary. He was kind to a fault, generous with his time, and had a great sense of humor. Wherever he was, the room was brighter for his presence. Today is just a little bit dimmer with his passing.

We are very sorry to hear about the passing of Dr. Ciecko. We had been going to him for over 8 years. He was a great doctor who always made time for you, especially when you had an appointment. He never rushed you & always listened to what you had to say. This is rare in today's society. The staff was also great, especially Leigh Anne. If you needed to see a specialist, he could always get you in right away. He will be missed. Hopefully, he is in a better place now.

My deepest condolences to your family. I have been a patient of Dr Ciecko for over 25 years. He was a kind and loving man. He always took as much time as you needed him to talk to you and never cut your conversation short. I used to bring my over grandson with me since he was 3 he wasn´t a patient but loved going to see him and bring him a chocolate donut. My grandson is in the Army but when I would tell him I was going to see him he would tell me not forget the donut. So many fond memories of Eddie who was one of our high school group (from Holy Ghost Prep and Nazareth Academy). Together we all watched Star Wars movies (multiple times) at the Orleans Theater, followed by pizza at Joseph's where we spent hours discussing pop culture, politics and life in general. I always enjoyed Eddie's quick wit and welcomed his sound advice - even as a teen. His passing (way too soon) is a loss for all of us.

Sweet Ed. Are you really gone from this world? How can this be?

It is with profound sadness that I say "farewell" to you my dear friend. This is not "goodbye," because I hope to see you again someday. You are definitely already with our Savior, and I will work to follow your example of living such a life "well lived!" You were always such a CLASS ACT. You are certainly a hard act to follow.

You were one of my closest friends throughout high school, college and law school. You came to my house every Tuesday throughout high school so we could watch "Monty Python" together and eat popcorn. You were always extremely generous, and gave the most amazing gifts. The blown glass piano that you gave me for my 16th birthday was nothing short of magnificent!
You were always there when our little group drove into New Jersey on weekends to go to our favorite bar to have a drink and disco dance! We were fresh out of high school and the drinking age was 21 in PA, but was just 18 in Jersey at the time. All of us wanted to just be together and dance dance dance. You preferred a night of lively conversation, but every so often you would join everyone on the dance floor!

Thank you for always calling me when you were in med school and I was in law school and it was too difficult for us to get together in person. Some of our conversations during those years were absolutely hilarious! I remember telling you that my first "client" during my law school internship met with me and then fired me after our meeting. He felt that I was too young and too inexperienced to help him. He subsequently tested positive for TB, and I had to go for a TB test! You responded that your first "patient" during your medical school internship met with you and then refused to allow you to examine her because she felt that you looked too young to really be a medical student! She said that she couldn't be examined by someone who looked younger than her own teenage son. A riot! You always did look great and quite youthful for your age.

The attached photo of you is from when you were in high school. It was taken in front of Stillwater Lake when you visited me at my parents' vacation home in the Poconos. You were probably about 18 at the time, but looked 12! So cute.

The last time I actually danced with you was in 1985 at my wedding. I look forward to dancing with you again someday. We'll have to dance a Polka, since we are both of Polish descent and were both raised immersed in Polish traditions and customs. Speaking of being Polish, I hope that you have already met Pope Saint John Paul II by now in heaven.

May you rest in peace my dear friend... Eternal rest grant unto you O Lord, and may perpetual light shine upon you. I will NEVER forget you. XO

We want to offer our condolences to the entire Ciecko family and also to his entire office staff. We are still in disbelief that we have lost such a wonderful person and doctor. He has given my husband, myself and most importantly our special needs son above and beyond care over the years. He was a friend to our son, not just a doctor. We knew that we always had his full support in any of our son´s medical needs. We will forever have an emptiness in our hearts.
We know you are in Heaven now, so Rest in Peace.

Our condolences to the family of Dr. Ciecko and to his office "family" (staff) as well. We are deeply saddened and shocked to hear of his passing. We have also been his patients for about 25 years, following him from Zemble/Donor's office to his private practice. He was an excellent, caring doctor. We used to joke about his seemingly over cautious approach, but we appreciated that he was that thorough and cared that much. He left nothing to chance. He sent me for a simple lung X-Ray to make sure I hadn't developed pneumonia and it turned out I was in severe heart failure and would have died if it hadn't been diagnosed so early. Always sent you to a specialist if he had the slightest concern and had no problem pressuring them for a timely appointment for his patients. Also opened his office up off hours to see us when needed. One week, he called me everyday to check on my husband's fever because he was concerned and puzzled, later he diagnosed as Lyme's disease. Endless stories like these. He faithfully followed up on his patients. He will be truly missed and we can't even fathom how we will handle our health care without him and his dedicated staff in our corner. Rest in Peace Dr Ciecko.

To the Ciecko family I am so sorry for your loss. I only knew him as my Doctor but he was just so caring and wonderful. He was old school. He took his time with you. He never rushed . He cared. He would call later at night or on a weekend to give you test results and check in after a sick visit. I cannot imagine I will find a Doctor that will be able to fill his shoes. That is just how high he set that bar. When my jobs insurance told me he was not in their network and it would cost me more out of pocket to see him I happily paid it because that is just how amazing he was! I could go on with a few specific instances where he was just so above and beyond what alot of patients experience these days. Again I am so sorry for your loss. You are in my prayers.

Dr. Ciecko has been my doctor since he started working with Dr. Zemble. He was the most caring and dedicated man. He will be greatly missed by many. I am so sorry for the loss of your brother.

Our condolences to the Ciecko family.

We started seeing Dr. Ciecko when he practiced at Zemble and Doner and followed him when he opened his practice. He was the most caring doctor, a throwback to the doctors of the past. When my husband had a stroke he opened his office early in the morning to make sure I knew what we had to do and questions to ask. When I had a bad allergic reaction to spider bites he opened his office on a Sunday afternoon to treat me. You could just tell how much he cared for his patients. He will be missed.

RIP Dr. Ciecko, you were a true Angel on earth, now you have your wings in Heaven.

It's hard to imagine a world without Ed. He was so tuned into how he could be of service -- this morning, I glanced at my last communication with him. It was a text offering help after a storm whipped our home in Cape May -- such a typical but extraordinarily generous offer. RIP, dear Ed, your life was a constant source of love and inspiration.

It's not every day you find a family Dr that takes the time to get to know each and every patient. You never felt rushed or like you were a number. I've never had a Dr who would say come in whether you are covered or not. A man that would donate his time and money to vaccinate the uninsured. Truly was one of a kind and will be dearly missed. Rest in paradise Edward Ciecko My condolences to his family and all the lives this great man touched.
