Edward Shelly Obituary

Edward Allen Shelly, 75, of Walnutport, passed away on Wednesday, November 1, 2023 in the company of family. Son of the late Nevin and Lorraine (Frederick) Shelly of Emmaus, Edward knew from a young age that he wanted to be a veterinarian. He spent his youth helping tend to his family's farm, participating in 4-H, and later competing in track and field as a long jumper at Emmaus High School and Kutztown University, where he earned his bachelor's degree. He continued his education at Wilkes College with his master's in microbiology culminating in his acceptance to The University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, proudly graduating with honors in 1976.

Edward worked for nearly 10 years as a veterinarian in Emmaus and at Maple Hills Veterinary Hospital in Allentown before moving to Palmerton to open Little Gap Animal Hospital in 1984. In 1990 he acquired Blue Ridge Veterinary Clinic in Walnutport. Although partially retired, he remained active at both locations until the time of his passing. They will continue to serve the surrounding communities under his son. He was a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association for over 40 years, the Pennsylvania Veterinary Medical Association, and a founding member of Valley Central Emergency Clinic in Fullerton.

An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting and fishing, especially from his boat on the Atlantic. Later in life, he was a successful competitive sporting clays shooter. He held a black belt in karate and golfed for many years, even making his own golf clubs for himself and others. At home, he always had a large vegetable garden and enjoyed cooking. Cape May, NJ and Anticosti Island in Canada held a special place in his heart. Above all, Edward was a devoted father. He adored his children and grandchildren and was always a positive force in their lives. He will be remembered as a generous man who was thoughtful and always reliable.

Survivors: Edward is survived by his children, daughter Kristen (Shelly) Molter wife of Guillaume Molter of Mansfield, MA, son Benjamin J. Shelly, VMD of Kunkletown, and their mother Theria (George) Shelly; sister Darlene Shelly of Benton; two grandchildren Zoe Molter and Leo Molter; friend Marianna Chryst.

Service: A gathering to honor his life and give condolences will be held on Saturday, November 25, 2023 between 1:00-3:00pm at the Campton Funeral Home, 525 Delaware Avenue, Palmerton, PA 18071. Online Condolences: www.schislerfuneralhomes.com.

Dr. Shelly was a warm compassionate man who made an outstanding vet. He is one of the few I would take my babies to. Now his son Ben has taken over his practice and we love him also. May he rest peacefully in God's loving arms.

Edward was my cousin, we grow up together, hunting, fishing in the farm pond, did some unusual adventure type things together, one in particular was curled in a tractor tire and pushed down a hill. We survived on our grandfathers farm. Our grandmother served Thanksgiving dinner the old fashion way, we lived in the old US ways, prayer in school, went to same church our great great grandfather started. Edward was always challenging myself in things. He a very honest, caring and friendly person.

To Dr. Ben and Family, and to the staff of Little Gap Animal Hospital, so very sorry for your loss. Dr. Shelly took care of our dogs for 30 years, he was always so patient and kind. And so proud of his children, it was wonderful to see him working side by side with his son. His intelligence and love of animals made an impact on everyone around him. He will be very missed.

Our condolences and prayers to Dr Shelly's family. He was a special vet, showing his kindness and compassion, especially during those tearful times when we had to say goodbye to our furry babies in their old age. He was an excellent surgeon, giving our labbies extended healthy lives. He will certainly be missed, but not forgotten. He definitely was a special man.

Doc Shelley was the best, it´s been 10 years since I moved away, but he was my veterinarian forever when I lived in the area. I gave him a ragdoll cat because my son had allergies, and he and his family gave him the best life ever he was always eager to show me pictures. He will be missed

Dr Shelly's family and past clinic staff members,
The doctor was so very skilled in the care of my cats. He also recognized my firm determination to see them get better. Though not sharing for decades a home with cats, I certainly respectfully recall and appreciate Dr Shelly's veterinary service. Cannot know how many pets in need that he helped, and their very grateful caregivers.
Sincere sympathy.

I have been going to Dr. Shelly since 1989. My husband has always been impressed with the genius this man was. Smart beyond smart. Diagnosis was always spot on! Surgeries were always meticulous. I am sure his son , who he took great pride in, and worked side by side with , will continue his legacy . Prayers to all of his family and staff , especially Sandy who has been with him at Little Gap from the beginning. Our hearts are broken. Rest in peace Dr. Shelly . You will be greatly missed.

This breaks my heart. I have known him for 25 years. He looked after all of our puppies. He also dealt with a crazy puppy mom...( me) ... not only was he our vet but we often talked about Canada and gardening. He will truly be missed. Thinking of his family especially his children.
