John Ritter Obituary

John R. Ritter
John R. Ritter, 62, of Neffs died April 16, 2013 at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, where he received the very best of care for complications related to a bone marrow transplant for cancer. John was born and raised as one of a family that settled in the Lehigh Valley in 1731. Clarence and Arline Ritter, his parents, eventually moved to Allentowns West End where he attended Muhlenberg Elementary School and Raub Junior High and graduated from Allen High School in 1968. He was proud of his Pennsylvania Dutch heritage, was a student of his familys history and a believer in the values he was taught. He attended Amherst College in Massachusetts, later graduated from East Stroudsburg University, worked at various jobs and then decided to teach high school English. He loved his students and worked hard to create a caring and challenging learning environment for them. He retired in 2010 from Parkland High School after teaching for 30 years. Because he cared about his colleagues and his profession, he was active in the Parkland Education Association as a building representative, negotiator and president. He was also active in the Pennsylvania State Education Association. Johns interest in politics went far beyond education. He believed that Pennsylvania needed common sense solutions to problems that would preserve the quality of life that he experienced while growing up and so he ran for the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in the 187th district. He loved the outdoors, especially a family home in the Poconos and his big back yard where he could care for a large garden. Survivors: John is survived by his wife, Lynn (nee Burner); sons, Dr. Seth Ritter and wife, Rebecca Taylor, of Pittsburgh, and granddaughters, Annabel and Eliza; Michael Ritter and wife, Meredith Mulcahy, of Boston, MA; and Zacchary Ritter and Sharon Kang of Baltimore, MD. He is also survived by his brother, Dr. Robert C. Ritter and wife, Susan, of Viola, ID and their sons, Joshua and Lincoln Ritter of Brooklyn, NY. He is survived by the loving Burner family; father-in-law and mother-in-law, George and Marie; brothers-in-law, George Robert, Harry, and Gary and their families. And he is survived by his aunt, Miriam (Unangst) Ritter and cousin, Robert V. Ritter and wife, Susan, and their children, Robert V. Ritter III and Sara, all of the Lehigh Valley. Cousins, Carl Schmoyer, wife Deborah, and Judy Labenberg and their families mourn Johns death. Services: Friends and family may visit from 6 to 9 p.m., Friday, and from 9 to 10 a.m., Saturday, in Trexler Funeral Home, 1625 Highland Street, Allentown. The service will follow Saturdays calling hour. Interment will take place at St. Pauls Church Cemetery, Trexlertown. Online condolences may be made at www.mcall.com. www.trexlerfuneralhome.com. Contributions: In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to Christ Lutheran Church, 1245 Hamilton St., Allentown, PA 18102.

I so often think of John, his wife and sons. I was so privileged to watch his three sons grow up and to spend many happy hours at Blue Heron. I think what I miss most about John is the enthusiasm with which he encouraged and endorsed my work as an educator. He made many people believe in themselves, a rare gift indeed.

I was very saddened to recently learn of Mr. Ritter's passing. He was an excellent teacher and always found a way to incorporate his great sense of humor into the lesson plan. Part of his legacy are all the students that had the privelege of having him as an instructor. Thank you, Mr. Ritter.

Lynn and family, I am so sorry for the loss of such a great man. As I read his guest book I realized that there was so much more to John. Although we discussed our fondness of gardening, I am saddened that I did not know all the other wonderful details of his life.
As a caregiver it is sometimes difficult to not open your heart more because the reality is you know this person has a horrible disease and you know that they will not survive it. I am greatful that I did see John here with Dr. Nair prior to him going for his transplant and yes he had a big smile on his face for me. This is how he will be remembered.

Dear Lynn and Family,
I was saddened to hear about John's passing from Tom Ritter yesterday. My family joins me in sending our sincerest condolences at this difficult time. John was a great son, husband, father, relative to us, colleague and teacher. Wow, what powerful testimonies from his former students! You're in my thoughts and prayers.
With sympathy and love.

April 21, 2013

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I grew up next door to John and have so many fond memories. I can still hear the creak of the screen door as “Johnny” bounded down the steps swinging a butterfly net to catch the wasps in the backyard. He was already a teacher, teaching me a love of nature as I watched him care for his Dutch bunnies “Fluffy and Thumper,” his beagle Charlie, and later Tulip the monkey. With a smile on his face, he'd invite us to play homerun derby, always pitching and giving the younger kids more chances to bat. He was truly a special guy and my childhood was richer for having known him. My mother and the rest of the O'Brien family extend their thoughts and prayers to you, Bobby, and to the entire Ritter family. God Bless.

Lynn and Family, I was a student at Jefferson elementary school with John. Then my twin daughters were fortunate to have him and Mrs Zosky for integrated. Both of my girls said he was their favorite teacher. He made English so interesting that they read the books used as text books as pleasure reading. Thanks for all the kids you influenced during your career at PHS. God Bless You. Rest in peace.

I am a former student of the Ritter/Zosky integrated English/History class - one of my favorite classes at PHS! They were a great team! Mr. Ritter taught useful tips and tricks that I used for SAT prep and still remember to this day. Anytime I hear a reference to Of Mice and Men or The Jungle, I think back fondly to our integrated class. He was a great educator, very nice man and will be missed. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

In one of my education classes last semester we were talking about how students will enter so many teacher's classrooms over the course of their education, but chances are they'll only remember a few. Mr. Ritter was one of my few. During the short year I spent in his classroom, Mr. Ritter taught me so much, not only about English, but about myself and although he didn't know it he has continued to teach me 6 years later. Parkland High School was a better place for having Mr. Ritter on its staff and I am a better for having him as a teacher. He will truly be missed!

Mr. Ritter was my english teacher my junior year (1996) at Parkland, when he co-taught with Mrs. Zosky. He was a wonderful educator. My sympathies as I remember how much he adored and talked of his family.

The highlight of my education at Parkland was the time I spent in class with Mr. Ritter, co-teaching with Mrs. Zosky. What an unbelievable team of teachers- you challenged us, questioned us (in right & wrong), and taught us lessons that have been carried beyond the classroom walls. I feel privileged to have spent time with you. My thoughts and prayers are with your family, especially Sara.

Dear Mrs. Ritter and Family,
Dolly, Michael and I are very sorry to hear about John's death. We have known you and John and your sons for a long time. We have many fond memories, chiefly among them were the side-of-the soccer games chats and the confabulations before and after the School Board meetings. Now, all those things are past, but the great memories will linger forever.
We regret immensely not to be able to attend the religious services, but our thoughts and prayers are with you.

I don't think there is any way I can put into words how saddened I am to lose John as a friend. A lifetime of tending to the language is still not enough to give me the right words. It has always been such a privilege to be included in the lives of the Ritter family. I have so many memories I will cherish of so many good times: times up at Blue Heron; times of DIY at Neffs, times of probing discussion tackling so many issues. I am grateful, as I am sure you would be grateful, that I have no trouble hearing John's voice in my mind's ear. I am confident that the sound of that voice and all that stood behind it will accompany me all of the days of my remaining life.

Mr. Ritter was one of the finest teachers I have ever known. The knowledge he brought to the classroom and conversations he held, as well as the way he treated each person with respect impacted me in many ways. Certainly, his style, wit and dry sense of humor will remain alive and well with his students.
