Mae G. Walter
Mae G. Walter, 93, of Avalon Manor, NJ, formerly of Egypt (Whitehall), PA, passed away on November 20, 2010 at Luther Crest, Allentown. She was the wife of the late John H. Walter; daughter of the late Harry P. and Susanna (Coppersmith) Grammes. She graduated from Whitehall High School at age fifteen and became a music educator with a B.S. degree from West Chester. Although a music major, she was very active in athletics and was awarded that schools Valkyrie blazer. A teacher in the Whitehall Township Schools she established and directed the first Whitehall High School Band in 1936. She and her husband owned and operated Walters Music Center in Egypt. Mrs. Walter was a member and accompanist of the Rose Croix Chapter #235, Order of the Eastern Star, North Catasauqua, and served on the Whitehall Township Library Board of Directors.As a retiree, she was a member of the PA Association of School Retirees, United Methodist Church of Avalon, Avalon Seniors, and worked as office manager for her son Johns Avalon Podiatric practice. In 1996, she co-founded the Middle Township Community Band, later renamed for her husband. Survivors: Mrs. Walter is survived by her daughters, Kathleen and husband Jerold Dougherty of Macungie, PA, and Suzann and husband John Callinan, Cape May Court House, NJ; twin sons, Dr. Thomas and wife Beverly of North Stonington, CT, and Dr. John, Jr., and wife Deborah of Media, PA. Also survived by eight grandchildren, Jennifer, Patrick, Megan, Christina, Brittany, Justin, John III, and Matthew; and eight great-grandchildren.In addition to her sister, Arleen Meyers and brother, Jesse Grammes, she was preceded in death by her grandson Evan. She was dedicated to her family and friends and taught, by example, the virtues of kindness and understanding. Services: Funeral service is Friday, November 26 at 12:30 p.m. at St. Pauls United Church of Christ, Trexlertown, PA, where visitation will begin at 11:30 a.m. followed by the Eastern Star service at 12:15 p.m. On Saturday, November 27 friends may call from 12:30 to 1 p.m. at the Chapel at the Cape May County Veterans Cemetery, Cape May Court House, with graveside service to follow. Contributions: In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Lehigh Valley Branch of the Alzheimer's Association, 617-A Main Street, Hellertown, PA 18055; or the John Walter Cape Community Band, 32 Canterbury Way, Cape May, NJ 08204.
