Maria Popowycz
Maria (Swerdan) Popowycz, 82, of Bethlehem, died Wednesday, November 3, 2004 in Lehigh Valley Hospital-Muhlenberg, Bethlehem. Born March 20, 1922 in Dedeva, Ukraine, she was the daughter of the late Wasyl and Rachel (Tvorinsky) Swerdan. She was the wife of John Popowycz of Bethlehem. They celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary April 15. Maria worked for Synthetic Thread Co. for 20 years before retiring in 1987. She also worked in various silk mills in Bethlehem, Hainka Perogies, Allentown and Anna Maria Restaurant, Allentown. She was a member of St. Josaphats Ukrainian Catholic Church, Bethlehem, where she was a member of the Parish Ladies auxiliary. She was also a member of the Ukrainian National Womens Association or Soyuz Ukrainok. Survivors: She will be lovingly remembered by her husband, John Popowycz of Bethlehem; daughters, Anna Kopchak, wife of Rev. Joseph, of Rome, N.Y. and Irene McKittrick, wife of Leonard, of Center Valley; sons, Joseph Popowycz, husband of Teresa, of Mountain Top and Michael Popowycz, husband of Laurie, of Mooresville, N.C.; sisters, Anna and Anastasia in Ukraine; granddaughter, Tania Metz; grandson, Matthew McKittrick; granddaughters, Jennifer and Katherine Popowycz; grandsons, Joseph, Joshua, Jacob and Nicholas Popowycz; great-grandson, Nicholas Metz. She was preceded in death by a brother, Dmytry Swerdan. Services: Panachida, will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday November 6, 2004, Connell Funeral Home Inc., 245 E. Broad St., Bethlehem. Office of Christian Burial with Divine Liturgy, will follow at 10 a.m. in St. Josaphats Catholic Church. Visitation will be held from 7-9 p.m. today, November 5, 2004 in the funeral home. Parastas will be held at 7 p.m. today in the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Josaphats Cemetery, Bethlehem. Contributions: May be made to St. Josaphats Ukrainian Catholic Church, 1826 Kenmore Ave., Bethlehem 18015.
