Melinda Kohn Obituary

Melinda Carol Kohn - who died on Monday, February 21, 2022, in Allentown at the age of 74 - loved three things: her family, her friends, and butter.

Born in Philadelphia, she grew up in Penns Grove, NJ, where she worked the cash register at her father's store. Her gift with numbers and complicated formulas led her to become a mathematician and, eventually, a computer programmer.

In college, she met Donald J. Kohn at a mixer. She liked that he knew how to use chopsticks and shined his own shoes. This coming May, they would have celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary. Their only child, Sally Kohn of Brooklyn, NY, is 44 years old and brought them nothing but joy for about 22 of those years. Among those peak moments of joy was Sally settling down for eternity with her partner Sarah Hansen, and Sarah giving birth to Don and Melinda's granddaughter, Willa - who has brought them infinitely more joy in 13 years than Sally ever could. Melinda traveled every other week to New York to help take care of Willa for much of her early childhood. They would go to the carousel in Prospect Park and drink kombucha. You've never met a happier grandmother.

Both Melinda and her husband were the most LGBTQ supportive parents in the entire Lehigh Valley. They founded and supported numerous LGBTQ organizations in the area, including staffing the PFLAG phone for many years, helping many other parents try to become a fraction as wonderful as them.

Melinda was the first woman to work as a technical manager AT&T's prestigious Bell Laboratories. But her real passion professionally came when she was appointed as ombudsperson at AT&T and eventually Lucent and Agere. She loved helping workers find voice, power and justice within the corporate machinery.

After her retirement in 2000, Melinda continued to be of service to those in need - primarily through handicrafts. For instance, she sewed colorful uplifting pillowcases for domestic violence survivors, knit blankets with finger puppets on them for children placed in foster care, and once crocheted hundreds of matching pink scarves for an LGBTQ rights parade. It's impossible to count the number of people who were touched by Melinda's habitual generosity. In fact we can never count; most of her acts of kindness were done quietly and anonymously.

Which brings us to butter. Melinda loved butter. Not just any butter, but a particular very thick, very yellow, very fragrant raw butter that we can't tell you about or everyone will know. She spread it on everything and, no, she didn't die of a heart attack (it was cancer). Melinda loved to say that after taking a bite, if you couldn't see your teeth marks in the butter you clearly didn't use enough.

To those who love her, Melinda is butter, spread throughout the nooks and crannies of our hearts, making every moment feel richer, nourishing us, and staying with us long after we're done. She left a mark on so many lives. Her absence is profound.

Melinda is survived by her loving husband Don Kohn, her daughter Sally Kohn, her daughter-in-law Sarah Hansen, her granddaughter Willa Hansen-Kohn, her brother Sid Schnell and his wife Barbie Schnell (Wilmington, DE), and so many others.

Sally, this obit was a delight to read-I´m sure mom would have loved it.

I can assure you that you were a delight to your mom every year of your life. (And I do realize this was satire. My husband, John, didn´t though...)

We were there very soon after your birth and witnessed the delight of your parents for the first third of your life. Your parents´ eyes never failed to light up when talking about you. Sadly, in later years, we lost touch.

My friendship began with your dad at work, and we both diverged in our paths at the corporation. We recently ran into him at Syb´s for Saturday breakfast.

Anyway, I wanted to let you know that you r mom is fondly remembered and (as I suspect you already know) they love you "to infinity and beyond".)

Kohn family:
I was saddened to read about the passing of your wife, mother, and grandmother. I met Melinda when I joined her staff at Bell Laboratories. I will keep all of you in my thoughts and prayers.

Melinda was always so easy to talk to because she seemed interested in so many subjects. She listened to whatever was on your mind and could converse about just about anything. She was kind and thoughtful. Every Christmas, she would always remember us in her gift giving. It was so unnecessary but it was so nice that she thought of us, every year even as we got older and older! I remember one year she made us hats and scarves. So personal! I am so sorry for your loss. She will be missed by all who knew her. Please know we are sending love to her whole family!! Hugs!

During my HS years Melinda and I were neighbors at Layton´s Lake. We lived 5 mi. from town and rode the school bus together to Penns Grove HS. She was my bridge and pinochle partner in our summer card games with Andy and Jerry. Looking back, I can see the seeds planted then that bloomed in her adult life. Her parents, Jerry and Pearl, were wonderful people.

Melinda was always self assured and knew what she was about. Her senior yearbook entry reference our legendary math teacher, George Brock. I think he would be amazed at how many of his students studied math and used the foundation he established as the basis for professional careers.

When I was a senior in HS, Melinda invited me to visit her at Trenton State. It was a pivotal time for me. After the visit I chose to stay in-state at Montclair. By the time I had settled in at Montclair State, Melinda had transferred to Moravian College and began her new life in the Lehigh Valley. In my scrapbook, I still have her wedding notice from the Penns Grove Record. My parents no longer lived at the lake and I moved to San Francisco. I lost contact with her. What could have been...

Oh yes, I vaguely remember the butter thing

My sincere condolences to the Kohn and Schell families.

My sincere condolences to Don and Sally. I have so many fond memories of Melinda, and will never forget how passionately (and rapidly!) she spoke about all the people, causes, and things that mattered most to her. Her unreserved and deep love for Don and Sally was a joy to behold. Melinda was something of a role model to me when I was a new mom and we both worked at Bell Labs, and she was beyond supportive - a life saver, really - when she offered Sally´s services as a babysitter one summer when I was desperately in need of help with my three girls. I shall now think of her fondly as I eat some heavily buttered bread. May her memory be a blessing to all who knew and loved her!
