Peter Davi Obituary

January 5, 1962 ~ December 4, 2007

MONTEREY – Peter Davi, brother, father and friend died on Tuesday in Pebble Beach doing the thing that he loved to do the most – surfing.
Peter was born in San Francisco, January 5, 1962; he was 45 years old. He attended both elementary school and high school in Monterey. Peter had lived on the Peninsula for the majority of his life. He was preceded in death by his parents, Anthony and Rosalie Davi and is survived by his son, Jake Kai Davi; his brother, James Davi (Lisa); sisters, Marijane Flagg (Jim), Josefa Davi Nolan (Dan), Karen VanBrabant (Dan) and Michele Davi Payne (Chris); nephews, Michael, Jamie, Kevin, Matthew, Luke and Santino; and nieces, Kathryn, Elli and Brianna. He also leaves several loving aunts, uncles and numerous cousins in Monterey and the Bay Area.
Peter was a renowned and respected big wave surfer, having spent many years proving himself in Hawaii. He was known for his size, power, and fearlessness. Peter was truly unique in his style and approach to the sport, and was always willing to pass on his love and passion for the ocean to the many people that he came in contact with over the years.
Peter was also a part of the rich tradition of the Monterey fishing industry. He carried on the legacy left by his father, Anthony James Davi, and his grandfathers, James Davi and Pietro Maiorana. Peter had worked for many years as a commercial fisherman, most recently on the local fishing boat the King Phillip. Peter also possessed a rare affinity for all things connected to the ocean. An avid jade collector, Peter would often turn these findings into unique and amazing pieces of art.
Peter received a certificate of appreciation for his heroic rescue
efforts at Carmel Beach in February 2002. Always connected to his family and friends, Peter had become a person truly admired and loved by all who had the good fortune to know him. Known for his generosity and kindness of spirit, this gentle giant of a man will be greatly missed.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated Saturday, December 8, 2007, at 10:00 a.m. at Saint Angela Merici Catholic Church, Lighthouse and 9th Ave., Pacific Grove.

To the Family of Pete:

My deepest condolences are for you at this most difficult time. Peter was a guy that definitely lived an adventurous life. And the wonderful thing is that, according to Jehovah God's Word the Bible, you have the hope of seeing Pete again on a Paradise Earth (Revelation 21:1,3,4,5); with PERFECT SURF EVERY DAY!!! :)

Peace to the Big Surf Giants who brave the waves! God is with you. Rest Peacefully. we will all be with you soon. I will miss all of the fun in the 80's with Yeagers, McCafferty's, Lou Boren and his camper at the beach, Fullers Beach, Pg, Asilomar, Pebble Beach, early morning Big Sur runs. I will also miss seeing you out on the big waves with people from Hawaii who come here to surf Steamer Lane. I put up your friend Gorilla from Hawaii and his son in my house for over a month, and I will never forget that you gave him a job! He would pull up at my house every night with a big dump truck with DAVI on the side wearing a Hawaiian straw hat (the neighbors were like WUT?) ...waiting for the big surf competitions....I never knew that all of these people in my life were LEGENDARY...but I do now...you are loved, and missed Peter. God has you in his arms now, my angel.

Peter was and will always be the man. Seeing him drop in at Big Jocko's in the winter of 94/95 or seeing him at way outside reefs off 7th Hole on a day with Kona winds. He always was in tune with the waves and conditions. Everytime it is big and perfect Peters' energy is their. In that way his legend lives on.

Jim and family,

I am so sorry to hear of Peter's passing. My thoughts and prayers are with you all at this time of grieving.

When I opened up my son's Sports Illustrated Magazine and saw his photo and name, I wasn't certain it was your Peter....until I noticed his surfboard. The memories I have of Peter are of this sweet and gentle teenager carrying a surfboard under his arm. Reading his story was bitter-sweet. He lived his dream. God bless him....God bless you.

Dearest Peter, in your sad absence from this place, I am comforted to believe that after all this time, - if we indeed do get to meet up with those who've gone before us- you are at last with your own dear mother you lost so many years ago.

Although you are much loved and missed by friends and family, it is a testament to your goodness and generous, loving spirit that so many wonderful notes have been left here on these pages from family and friends.

Last and most importantly, I want to thank you for taking on the post of Guardian Angel- for your son, your friends and family. It will be a big job, but we know you have the heart for it and your presence is a blessing for all.

Jimmy,

I know that the loss of a brother is difficult. I can not put into words the feelings or emotions to express my sympathies.

Always keep in mind that Peter's Spirit was much bigger than his earthly body could contain and now his Spirit has been released to the ocean, the place of his Soul, his Joy and his Happiness.

Peter will always be with us, overlooking the Great Oceans, spirited over the biggest waves.

With our sincere love and condolences to you and the Davi Family.

Josefa, Jake, and the Davi family
I was so saddened to hear the news about Peter. I remember him as a sweet, gentle soul full of life. Jake, the first time I saw you, your dad was carrying you on his shoulder at River Inn Pool. You were maybe 2 or 3 years old. I remember watching him-you two were so handsome together, and he was so proud to be your daddy. Our lives intertwined in other ways soon after though we rarely saw each other. Do know that me and my kids (Trevor and Nicoya Hudson) are deeply saddened for your loss. The response to your father's passing is a testament to who he was and how he lived his life, something to forever treasure. Warm and loving thoughts to you and yours.

Dear Family, Friends and all surfers,

I live in Denver and have been addicted to the phenomenom of big wave surfers. My heart goes out to all of you for your loss. The risks of surfing are there, but this sport is defintely one that I believe to the be most rewarding and peaceful. May God Bless all of you at this time and may you rest in peace Peter! Only a few people can surf like you did and your legend will live on. May your son spread his wings in that big beautiful ocean and ride with your spirit along his side always.

Dear Jake and Family...
I send you my prayers and love during these very troubling and heartfelt times... There are no words that I can say to comfort your heart when you lose your dad and brother, except to say that you were his world and that he loved you so much... I lived down the street from Peter on Wellings Place growing up and went to grade school at Monte Vista with him and graduated with him from Monterey High School... I hadn't seen him for a long time and then he popped up about 8 years ago and came to my house with mutual friends, he took my son Peter under his wings and spent some time hunting with him... that was very special to me... I know he loved you Jake very much... people's actions speak more than words... I hope you know that time will lessen your pain... and he is only a conversation away... in the sea, in the trees, he will be there with you always... God bless you and keep you safe and healthy...
Love,
Karen Dobroszelski and family

Peter was well loved by many. He was a dear friend, and will be dearly missed. He will be in our hearts for eternity. He always had a smile on his face and knew how to light up any day.
While I was Lover's Point for Saturday's ceremony, someone from Colorado came and asked me what was going on. I explained to her what had happened and this was our way of celebrating his life. She was very touched by the wonderful community we had here, and made me feel proud to be a part of it.
Much love and aloha spread to everyone, especially to you, Jake!!

Pete,
we shared many big wave sessions...my aussie wife loved the heart you showed on your shelve...you inspired me to wait for the mega -sized wave...I remember this one session at pipeline...I was paddling out with 3rd reef bombs popping, and I saw you sitting in the middle of the line-up on 2nd reef, with all the pros and all pipe specialists foaming at the mouth paddling around you....as you sat like a statue...not finching a bit...a master and commander of the battlefield..."I said to myself, Pete's the man"
Jake...Keep strong, love you

Dearest Peter and the Davi Ohana,
I received the sad news of Peter’s passing through a phone call from a very special person whom I had lost touch with many, many years ago. It’s just like Peter to put old friends back in touch again!
Peter was my best friend through high school and the years immediately following. We surfed, camped, hiked, hung-out and did all the wonderful things that best friends do together including getting into trouble. Thank God that we never really did anything too outrageous! Peter and I moved to Hawaii together in 1979 where he attended Nanakuli High School and I attended the University of Hawaii. I later lost touch with Peter when he returned to California.
Even though I lost touch with Peter he has always been very dear to me and it brings a smile to my face as I remember all the things we used to do together.
As I read the various entries in his guest book, it reminds me of who he was to me. Peter was a gentle, kindhearted man with a big smile that really loved and respected the ocean. Peter knew how to live life to its fullest.
To Jake and Peter’s family, I send my deepest condolences for the loss of a father, brother, cousin, uncle and great man.
To his many friends, I’m sure that he would want us to remember him as the kind gentle giant that truly loved to surf big waves. He is now surfing the biggest, cleanest waves in heaven. Ripping it up with God as his tow-in partner.
Peter will always have a very special place in my heart and I look forward to the day we meet again in the presence of the Lord.

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. – John 3:16

I will miss you! I'll always remember the good times we had
and your wonderful laugh. I hope and pray that our souls will meet again in Heaven. Mark and my hearts go out to your family, including Jake during this sad time. Even though we are living in a remote place in Western Australia, half a world away, we can still grieve for you and your family. We will be visiting Monterey in February and will try to visit our mutual friends and family then. Peter, you will always be one of a kind in my memory and remebered with a smile.
Memories . . .
Dropping in on a Big Sur wave with your arms spread out and the "Mano"
stance.
Emerging from the waterfall clean and refreshed.
Bellowing at Jake from the beach with encouragement and sometimes *@#%?!.
Coming in to Sea Harvest with sweat pants, slaps and a dirty tank top, telling about your latest adventures on the ocean.
Jaffles at sunset in your Hydes.
Arm hanging out the window of your pick up truck checking the surf and always up for a good chat and a laugh.
A Rock and Roll and Robata's.

Dear Jake and the Davi's We are so sad about your loss and ours. Pete was "the Surf Dad" to our boys Jonny and Nick ever since they were little and we moved to Carmel. To Peter's family, friends, the surfing community, and to Jake:

I was shocked and so saddened to learn that Peter had been taken by his Ultimate Wave. I was a neighbor of Peter and Jake's in Big Sur when Jake was just little. I remember Peter as being a big guy with an even bigger heart....it was a privilege to know him, and Jake was very much his daddy's boy. My heart hurts for you all, and I pray for your comfort, strength, and healing. Peter left a legacy of love, kindness, and generosity; thank you, Peter, for your life.

Dear Jake,
My condolences go out to you and your family. I met your dad and then you when I first moved here in 1998. We had a surfboard repair shop at my house in PG where all the locals would come for repairs and just hang out. This is where we first met. Pete brought a quiver of boards to us from Hawaii for repair. One of the boards was a 8'plus gun that he later let me ride on a rather large day at Lovers Point. It was 2-3 times over head and clean. I caught a few good ones and paddled in and thanked him for the opportunity. I will sure miss him out in the water. He was a good guy to surf with; very humble. He really was the gentle giant of Monterey. I hope to see you out in the water one of these days again. It was fun surfing with you and your dad at South Moss and other spots around the area. I hope all is well otherwise for you and that your having fun ripping the Islands. In the end Im glad he went out doing what he truly loved to do; riding mountains of water.

I remember meeting Peter decades ago at our family cabin near Big Sur. I was outside on a warm summer day washing my car. He stopped his wheels directly in front of me. I thought he was a tourist passing by that was needing directions. He said 'no he was just enjoying the scenery' and smiled back at me. Being blonde, it took me a minute to get what he meant. So very sly he was with the ladies back in the day! Smiles. Over time, Peter's friendship taught me to respect the ocean and to truly listen to what the ocean had to share with us humans. I spent most of my youth watching all the guys dance with the waves in our special little spot in this world - always making sure to see the sunset each night at Carmel beach. I learned to respect nature for all that it has to share. I have great sadness to know that a big part of all that magic is now gone. I will forever remember Peter's sandy footsteps, wavy hair, broad frame and wide smile. Peter was a gentle giant who was a great friend with a kind soul. Peter told me twenty plus years ago that he would pass away surfing a 60 foot plus wave. It was the way he said he wanted to go. I understand now that he knew his destiny even as a young man. He wanted to live life powerfully every day doing what he loved until the end. I respect him greatly for who he was for the people in his life and for the simple joy he brought everyone he came in contact with. My deepest sympathy for his loving family and great friends. I know many of you who must be deeply saddened by this loss. I now live far away and yet I am with you all in your grief now. In his memory, may he inspire us to live life to the fullest, take on more than we think we can do, to believe in what is possible and to do something every day that we love no matter what. God Bless.

I am so deeply sorry for your loss.
Peter was such a kind-hearted man. He was so full of life, it is so hard to think of him otherwise.
My favorite memory of him is when he arrived on my doorstep in Carmel with a delicate bouquet of wildflowers. I will always remember that sight, the sight of such a strong man with a spirit that was so gentle, holding a gift that he had gathered from the coastlines of California.
He will be missed and remembered.

Dear Jake and Davi Family,
My heart goes out to you at the immeasurable loss of Peter. Such a good and kind man. I remember him as an honest, giving brother, who was generous to my sons, Orion & Shone, when they lived at Pete's place in Monterey. I admired his free spirit lifestyle and generosity to all.
I could see that he was a Titan of the surf world, and a fearless voyager of the seas.
I grieve with you as the sea has taken our dear brother, whose mighty waters were both friend & foe; in whose majestic cradle of life he harvested the ocean's bounty, and made staggering poetry among its towering waves.

Blessings,
Craig Houx

Giant bretheren, fellow surfer and local legend. You gave me a warm sincere hug and took the shirt (Hui) off your back and proudly gave it to me. I always remembered that Pete, and I always will. What a blessing to have you enter me into your protection. I did not get a chance to see you in the last 2 years but like we always do, Aloha brudda, hang loose! The Gogarty's will miss you!

I am so deeply saddened by the loss of Peter. I met him as a teenager, he was my boyfriend's best friend. He was a big sweetheart of a guy and he endeared himself not only to me but to my family. I will always have a place for him in my heart. My heartfelt sympathies for his family and those who loved him.

I consider it a true blessing to have known Pete. He was a kind soul...the kind that are few and far between. Pete was passionate about anything he did...especially fishing and surfing. He truly embraced life and lived each moment fully.
Pete, you will forever be in the hearts of many. Your memory will last an eternity. You have touched so many in your life and even in passing. Each time I look to the sky and see "waves" in the clouds, I will think of you and see you there...surfing the waves of the heavens. Pete, Rest in Peace and Surf's Up!!!

My prayers are especially with Jake during this time of loss. And to everyone who feels the great void left by Pete's passing. May God be with us all!!
