Steven Ray Auvil passed away on Saturday, November 26 from acute myeloid leukemia. Steve was born November 16, 1947 to Ellit Ray and Freda Auvil in Cass City, Michigan, and grew up there on his family's dairy farm. He earned his Ph.D. in chemical engineering from Michigan State University, and started his career at Monsanto in St. Louis, MO. Jane and family,
So sorry for your loss. Steve is one of the most amazing people I've ever met. He hired me into Air Products in 1997 and was also a great mentor and colleague. He and all of you will be in our prayers. He and Stacey bonded over their shared dairy upbringing as well. We will miss him. With a heavy heart, Kevin and Stacey Fogash

I first met Steve in 1997, having travelled from the UK to review new technology with him. My nervousness at working with Air Products' Chief Engineer was misplaced, he was approachable, encouraging and always helpful. Over the subsequent years, we worked on many projects and solved many issues together; his determination, creativity and positivity were inspiring. I will greatly miss his expertise, his thoughtful advice, and guidance.

Our condolences on your loss. Steve was a very supportive leader during my time at Air Products. I appreciated his willingness to help and to have open conversations, even with people outside of his formal authority. I enjoyed interacting with a fellow Spartan.

The actress Karen Black once remarked to a friend, "Some people are comfortable with creating, some are comfortable with changing, and some with stopping; For instance, policemen stop things." Steve Auvil's career at Air Products encompassed all three functions: creating, changing, and stopping. He did splendidly on all three, with "bright air and brilliant fire." (That quote incidentally is on diamonds. Come to think of it, Steve was a diamond, in more ways than one.)
If anyone updates the book "The genius of industrial research," the chapter on engineering would favorably mention the Auvil approach: using seemingly simple-minded tools to perceive the gestalt of a problem, solving it effectively after a searing search for answers at various depths, and communicating the results in prose that is "clear and simple as the truth."
I was one of Auvil´s first direct reports at Air Products. He taught me a lot, about engineering, science, life . . . .
Rest in peace, boss!

To Jane and family - Andra and I are so sorry to hear of Steve's passing. You both were such kind and loyal supporters of the arts programs at DeSales. Steve's passion for the productions and his lovely, written reviews sent the following day via email were a testament to his unbridled joy for the students' talent and creativity. May peace come from knowing how much he gave to others. - John Bell, DeSales University
