William Scharle Obituary

William James Scharle, "Bill," entered into eternal rest early morning on October 25, 2022. He was 93 years old. Bill was the loving husband of Rose Marie "Bunny" (O'Neil) Scharle, who died in 2019. They were married for 67 years in June 2019. Together they shared a wonderful life together passing on their philosophy of faith, hard work, and benevolence to their five children and their families. Born and raised in Allentown, Bill was the son of the late Carl L. and Marie (Weingartner) Scharle. Bill was a lifelong member of the Cathedral of St. Catharine of Siena Parish and his parents were one of the founding members of the parish. Bill graduated valedictorian of the 1946 class of Allentown Central Catholic HS received a Bachelor of Chemical Engineering from Villanova University, an MS in Chemical Engineering from Lehigh University and a Program for Management Development Degree from Harvard University.

Bill spent his entire business career of 38 years with Air Products and Chemicals, Inc. As a young engineer he embraced the opportunity to work at the top-secret Air Products "Papa Bear" hydrogen plant in Florida in support of the NASA space race. In his long career there, he advanced through the ranks at Air Products, becoming Vice President of Engineering, Operations and Manufacturing and ultimately retiring in 1989 as Group VP of the Process Systems Group.

In retirement, Bill and Bunny enjoyed traveling the world. Bill was also highly involved in volunteer work, sharing his engineering and management skills. He served on the Board of Directors for the Sacred Heart Hospital, Holy Family Manor Nursing Home and Catholic Charities as well as sitting on the President's Council at DeSales University. He worked as a volunteer Project Manager for numerous building projects within the Diocese of Allentown. He had a strong commitment to Catholic education and his parish of St. Catharine of Siena serving on the Parish Council, Chairman of the Finance Committee as well as chairing the Building Committee for a Parish Revitalization Project. Bill was also a member of the Allentown Serra Club. Bill received several special awards for his engineering accomplishments and charitable contributions to the community including the 1980 J Stanley Morehouse Award from Villanova, the 1994 Distinguished Graduate Award from Allentown Central Catholic HS, and the 2010 Catholic Charities Gala Honoree.

Bill had a love for music which spanned his entire life as he played alto saxophone and clarinet with the high school band, the Hal Haley Band, the Villanova band and even the Sacramento Valley Symphonic Band over the course of his life. You could also find him playing the "boomba" with his friends at Leather Corner Post. Bill also enjoyed photography and he carried a reputation of capturing the perfect photo of every family milestone. Tennis was another favorite hobby which he played often in his younger years with friends and family. Bill had a dry wit, loved a good prank, proudly sported his Villanova gear, and never turned down ice cream. Spending time with his family was his favorite pastime, particularly holiday gatherings and beach vacations on LBI. Bill was a man of faith. His generosity, wisdom, unconditional love and support will be deeply missed by family and friends.

Bill is survived by son, Dr. W. Timothy Scharle MD and wife Teri of Bethlehem, PA; daughter, Jane, wife of Christopher R. O'Neill of Orefield, PA; daughter, Maryann, wife of Kevin G. Rogers of Allenhurst, NJ; daughter, Eileen, wife of D. Few are as accomplished, personally and professionally, yet remain an everyday colleague as Bill...accessible when needed, instructive as required, supportive but challenging all are the characteristics that define him...he is missed already...best regards to his friends and family.

I knew Bill my entire career at Air Products and I enjoyed every moment with him. He was a true gentleman and had the highest ethics. His contributions to the company are long lasting. I also had the pleasure of serving with Bill on the De Sales President's Council along with his life long friend Carl Frensky. I know Bill and Bunny are now sharing eternal peace in Heaven with Carl and Peggy. To Bill's family all I can say is how fortunate you are to have had Bill. I know you will have good life long memories of him. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

My deepest sympathies to the families of Bill and his wife. While considering a career change from Air Products during the 1960's, I met with Bill to discuss my career ideas and he convinced me to take a management position that was offered within Air Products. I accepted and retired after 35 years with the company. A belated "THANKS" to Bill for his professional advice! God bless!

I wanted to offer my condolences to the family. My father considered Bill his best customer and I know they went back many years. We would often bump into Bill and Bunny at Two Guys on a Saturday night. When I was starting out my career in chemistry, Bill helped me get a job at APCI where I spent 30 years with another 10 at Intertek. I am sorry for your loss.

Bill Scharle was my early mentor at Air Products; his invisible hand guiding me until his retirement. He always made time for everyone, it mattered not whether you were an entry level plant operator or a general manager. After his retirement from Air Products, he continued to live his life in service to his community for many decades. What an exemplary life! RIP Mr. Scharle.

I´ve knew Bunny and Bill for many years. I also served on many boards with Bill-we were both very active at Sacred Heart Hospital. Bill was a tremendous asset in keeping the hospital afloat during some very difficult times. He was such a great leader in our community!

I did not have the pleasure of knowing Mr. Scharle at APCI, where I was employed for 30 years. I and my family knew him simply as 'Bill'. Bill was my mom's neighbor, a few doors down, at Phoebe Terrace. The sight of him on his bench (Bill's Bench to my mom) calmed her spirit and his presence on the bench made us feel like all was peaceful and calm in the otherwise chaotic world. Upon learning of our mutual employment, we shared wonderful conversations about our careers. As I learned of his deep and unconditional love of his family and his faith, it furthered my respect and admiration for his intentions and character. They came from the center of his soul. Sharing our mutual passion for volunteering and photography gave me much to look forward to in my senior years as Bill showed me the possibilities of it. To his family, know that while he was your dad, grandfather, uncle or brother, to my mom he was just Bill, one of the best conversationalists at dinner and the kindest and most respectful of his neighbors. And for me, every so often, I'll do my best to visit 'Bill's Bench' with my mom and we will just sit awhile. We are so sorry for your loss.

Scharle Family,
Please accept my sincere sympathies in the loss of your dear father. I have wonderful memories of him and your mother who would travel with the Air Products retirees as well as come to hear the chorus perform at Phoebe Terrace. He was a great man and executive who cared about people.

I had the great fortune to work along side Bill for a number of years on the Management Committee at Air Products. I replaced Bill as Group VP upon his retirement. He was a great contributor to Air Products success during his career. He was a valuable resource for the Archdiocese of Allentown and their building activities. A life well done. RIP. Bob Gadomski
