Adeline P. Austin passed away on Friday, March 16, 2012 at Mercy Medical Center at the age of 85. She fought a dauntless battle with several illnesses over the last few years, never giving up hope, right up until the end.
A native of California, Adeline was born in Los Banos on February 11, 1927 to Joao and Diulinda Parreira. She moved with her family to Cressey and then to Atwater as a young girl. In 1957 she married Garland Austin. They also made Atwater their home.
Garland and Adeline enjoyed taking drives and when their daughter was young, they enjoyed camping in their travel trailer. Adeline loved children and her home was always open to nieces and nephews, the neighborhood children, and her daughter's friends. She also loved animals and took in many stray cats over the years.
She worked as a nurse's aide at both Mercy Hospital and Bloss Hospital in the 1950's and early 1960's. But for most of her life, she was a homemaker. Her greatest joy in life was that of a grandmother. She loved her two grandchildren dearly and spoiled them every chance she could.
Adeline was preceded in death by her husband, Garland, who passed away in 1993; parents, Joao and Diulinda; her sisters, Mary Soares and Virginia Fagundes; a brother, John Parreira Jr.; and a nephew, Leroy Soares.
Surviving her is a daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Kevin Miller of Merced; granddaughter, Morgan Miller; grandson, Erich Miller, both of Merced; sister, Ethel Bettencourt, of Atwater; brother, Joe Parreira, of Oakdale; and many, many nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held Friday, March 23, 2012, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Ivers & Alcorn Funeral Home, 3050 Winton Way, Atwater, CA 95301. A memorial service will follow on Saturday, March 24, 2012, at 10:00 am at Ivers & Alcorn with Reverend Charles Austin officiating.
In lieu of flowers, please send a contribution in her name to Mom's wonderful medical oncologist's research lab at Stanford University. Dr. Rajat Rohatgi not only gave her more time, but hope and encouragement as well. We can't thank him enough for all the care and compassion he gave mom and outstanding medical care. Dear Karen and Family, I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your Mom. I have so many wonderful memory's of her as a young girl..One of my favorite's was when they got the colored tv and invited us over to watch the Wizard of Oz..Your Mom made popcorn, and we all sat in the livingroom..She thought something was wrong with the tv because the first 15 minutes was in black and white..I smile when I see the movie, it's a memory I have carried through the years. You Karen were the light of her and your Dad. Your parent's touched so many lives and brought warm thought's to all who knew them..It is an honor to have known them, and I will cherish so many happy memory's. May God Bless You and Your Family..

Dear Karen,

I am so sorry to hear of Adeline's passing. I smiled at the part of her obituary speaking of her and the neighborhood children. She was like a second mother to me. I always had a great time at your house. She would always fix lunch for us. She would even bring it out to the playhouse when we would be there playing.

She was also one of the funniest people I have ever known.

I will always have very special memories of her.

Take comfort in the love that so many had for her.
