Alice Margaret Gemmill passed away peacefully on December 8, 2015 in Merced, CA.  She was 91.
Mrs. Gemmill was born on January 26, 1924 in Sterling, WI to her parents, Elvina and Freeman Sidie.  She was a resident of Merced County for over 50 years, after previously living in Louisiana and Bermuda.  She was a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) before becoming a Registered Nurse (RN).   She loved her work and spent many years as a nurse at Mercy Hospital in Merced.  Mrs. Gemmill was active in her church, Central Presbyterian Church of Merced, and supported many charities.  She also loved traveling, music, theater, reading, and her faithful dog, Pepe.
Mrs. Gemmill is predeceased by her husband, Robert Gemmill, a Lt. Col. in the Air Force who was stationed for a time at Castle AFB and eventually retired from Travis AFB.  She is also predeceased by her only child, William F. Stringer, Sr., who was a resident of Stockton.
She is survived by her grandchildren, William F. Stringer, Jr., Washington, DC; Kristine E. Stringer, South Orange, NJ; Debra A. Cieplak, Eagle River, AK; Dawn M. Galli, Vancouver, WA; and her eight great-grandchildren, Ann Marie and Kimberly Stringer; Will and Milo Blake; Adelaide and Danielle Cieplak; and Elizabeth and Louis Galli.
Arrangements are through Ivers and Alcorn Funeral Home, 901 West Main Street, Merced.  A visitation will be held there on Wednesday, December 30, 2015 from 5-8PM.  The funeral and graveside service will take place at 11AM on December 31st at Winton District Cemetery, 7651 West Almond Avenue, Winton.  All are welcome to attend.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mrs. Gemmill's name to the American Cancer Society, Amnesty International, or the charity of your choice
