Calvin Hashimoto Obituary

Calvin Hashimoto
October 10, 1945 - February 3, 2017
Calvin passed away from leukemia in the comfort of his home on the Big Island of Hawaii on Friday, February 3, 2017.  He attended local schools, graduating from Atwater High School in 1963.  He went to UC Berkeley and graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Architecture in 1969.
Cal joined the Peace Corps and was sent to serve in Sierra Leone, Africa. Afterward he traveled extensively in Western and Central Africa, settling for seven years in Mombasa, Kenya.  Eventually he returned to the US for a short stay before travelling throughout Mexico and Central America.
In 1982, he moved to the Big Island (Hawaii) and found his true "home." Through many cycles of experimentation with different media, BAMBOO became his art form.  He became the foremost Bamboo sculpture/artist in the Country; his mastery and techniques were written up in various magazines and books.  He invented ways to work with Bamboo that had not been used before.  Cal's beautiful and striking work has been admired and collected throughout America.

Cal finished his "Bucket List" here, and has now started a new and most exciting adventure.   A Memorial and Celebration of Cal's life was held on Hawaii, at Paleaku Peace Garden, on March 5, 2017.

Some of my best memories of Sierra Leone involve Cal and many were preceded by him saying, "Aw come on, we can do this." Part of his legacy is a school he helped me build. He is missed.
