Chowchilla, California - Floyd M. Roland was born October 28, 1928 to Floyd and Della Roland (Taylor) of Washington, OK. Floyd M. Roland, a 30-year resident of Merced and previously a resident for 32 years in San Jose. Floyd quietly passed away in his home on Friday, February 26, 2021. Floyd was 92 years old.
Floyd was a veteran in the Army. He was a painting contractor and owned Roland Painting Co., Inc. for 32 years. His company worked throughout the bay area and east bay during this time period until he retired. Floyd enjoyed playing in adult basketball at the San Jose YMCA, played in the city leagues and sponsored teams for many years. Floyd enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing, hunting and camping. His most favorite place to camp and spend time with family was at Jackson Meadows.
Upon moving to Merced in 1989, Floyd and Ione started the non-profit Harvest Time, a food ministry at Calvary Assembly of God. Floyd approached numerous grocery stores for food donations, while purchasing many foods himself. Food donations also came from some of the largest food growers and food production companies in the San Joaquin valley. Floyd and other volunteers picked up food six (6) days a week and handed out food in parks and twice a month at the church. They never ran out of food. However, they did start running out of space to store the food due to the generous donations. Floyd built and donated a 4,500 square foot warehouse on the empty lot belonging to the church to store the food and supplies. Floyd retired from Harvest Time in 2017 and to this day the Harvest Time food program is still blessing many in Merced.
Floyd Roland is survived by his loving and faithful wife, Ione Combs Roland of 72 years of marriage. He is survived by daughter, Melva Underwood and son-in-law Dale (Chip) Underwood (deceased) of Henderson, NV; son, Art Roland of Brentwood, CA and daughter, Valerie Roland of Kauai, HI; He is survived by 6 grandchildren: Ralene Martinez, Jennifer Davidson, Mark Underwood, Kari Skinner, Brian Roland and Heather Hill; and 9 great-grandchildren.
Floyd has passed from death into LIFE! He was in the land of the dying, but now has entered the land of the Living.
Graveside Services for Floyd will be held on Tuesday, March 9, 2021 at 1:00 PM at Chowchilla District Cemetery.
