Jerry Martin, age 71, of Merced passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Jerry was born to William and Agnes Martin in Fresno, CA on May 19, 1947. His sister, Nadine, was born 5 years later and bravely endured endless teasing from her mischievous older brother. Jerry earned his B.A. in math and his teaching credential from Fresno State. That is also where he met the love of his life, his wife, Tricia Martin. She fell in love with his dimples and charm, and dad thought she was a "sharp dresser." They married June 17, 1972 and Jerry always referred to Tricia as his angel. Jerry was Tricia's "Prince Charming."
Jerry's first teaching job was at Le Grand High, where he taught math for 12 years. Always the hard worker, he drove the school bus before and after school, as well as other odd jobs to provide for his family. Jerry went on to teach math at Atwater High for 23 years. It was there that he developed his great repertoire of math jokes and chalk puns. He also perfected his famous "marker flip" and "moon walk." Jerry loved teaching, and after retiring in 2007, he continued to substitute teach, especially at Livingston High where he was loved by many. He kept his students entertained by learning the latest dance moves; the dab was a particular favorite.
Jerry had a deep love for trains, and could tell whether a passing train was a freight or an Amtrak, simply by the sound of the horn. He enjoyed visiting freight yards whenever he could, as well as working with his model train set. He especially loved taking his grandson on train rides and also visits to the train station, just to watch the trains go by.
Jerry is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Tricia Martin; his daughter, Janel Martin and her son Dale of Merced; his daughter Jennifer and her husband Jeff Parsley of Atwater; his sister Nadine (David) Pogue and family of Campbell, CA.
At Jerry's request, there will be no services.

Saddened to see Mr. Martin passed away. His math jokes and moon walk in class were hilarious. I wasn't the best Algebra student but he always was fair in his grading he wanted us to do well. He will never be forgotten by his Le Grand High students. Sweet Sweet Man!

I was one of his student at LGHS. He was a great math teacher, and a funny guy! I can tell you that his students adored him. One of my favorite teachers, ever! God Bless you, Mr. Martin! It takes a special person to teach teenagers, and you were one of the best!

He was a great math teacher and my bus driver at Le Grand. He was a great person to look up to. He will be missed, but God has other plans for him in Heaven!
