Michael Tanner Obituary

Michael J Tanner

November 27, 1941 - January 25, 2025

Atwater, California - It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Michael J. Tanner, an extraordinary man whose kindness, dedication, and passion for life touched so many. Born on November 27, 1941, in Turlock, California, Mike's journey was one of hard work, deep love for the land, and unwavering devotion to his family and community.

Raised in Mariposa by his Nana and Grandaddy, Mike learned the values of diligence and perseverance working on the family farm from a young age. It was there that he cultivated a lifelong love for agriculture and the natural beauty of the Central Valley. His commitment to preserving farmland became his mission, and he was a proud founding member of the Central Valley Farmland Trust, ensuring the region's agricultural heritage would endure for future generations.

Mike graduated from Mariposa High School in 1959, and Fresno State in 1964, with a degree in Agricultural Inspection and Services. That same year, he began a 38-year career with the Merced County Agricultural Commissioner's Office, starting as a field inspector and eventually serving as Agricultural Commissioner for nearly 20 years. His work was more than a job--it was a calling, and his contributions to the local, regional, and state agricultural community left an indelible mark. Even after his retirement in 2003, Mike continued to champion agriculture in the Central Valley.

A gifted athlete, Mike excelled in football, basketball, and baseball, and his love of sports carried on through his daughters and grandchildren. He spent countless hours coaching, cheering, and sharing the joys of athleticism with his family. Mike also found peace and joy in the great outdoors, whether backpacking, cross-country skiing, or traveling with his beloved wife of 40 years, Cathy. Together, they built a life filled with adventure, love, and lasting memories.

Mike's legacy lives on through his three daughters: Kelly Nunes (Jon), Lisa Biolley (Paul), and Amy Pellissier, his eight cherished grandchildren, Jordan and Julia Nunes, Sarah, Chesna and Niles Biolley, and Tanner, Elise and Reagan Pellissier, and three great-grandchildren, Frida, Killian and Jameson, all of whom he adored and inspired with his integrity, generosity, and warmth. He was a pillar of strength and fairness, respected by all who had the honor of knowing him.

Mike was preceded in death by his wife, Cathy; his parents, Frank Tanner and Mary Ellen Himmelstoss; and his brother, Thomas Fausone.

To celebrate Mike's remarkable life, a Celebration of Life will be held on February 22, 2025, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Merced Elk's Lodge #1240, where he was a dedicated member for 53 years.

Mike Tanner was a man of quiet strength, selfless service, and unwavering love for his family, friends, and community. He leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire and uplift all who knew him. He will be deeply missed but never forgotten.

We were so very sorry to hear of Mikes passing. He was such a special man. As we worked in agriculture, we often were fortunate to see him quite often. Although we moved from the area in 2008, we continued to stay in touch with annual Christmas cards. Always having pictures of his family and trips that they took, you could see the love he had for life. We actually had just spoke about him a week ago, remembering memories. We send our prayers to family and may memories you have, support you during this difficult time.

My husband Fernando and I enjoyed the friendship of Mike and his love, Kathy Slater for many years. We especially enjoyed our trip to Tahiti together on the Paul Gauguin and their visit to us in Henderson, NV. Mike was also a great swimmer and snorkler. We will miss him and his quiet strength, his gentle manner and sly sense of humor enormously. Rest in peace Mike.

We have called Mike our friend for sixty years, starting at Merced County Ag.Dept where I worked in the summer months while still a student, to being my Best Man in our wedding in 1970.
What a great friend that will be missed by so many.
Rest in Peace my friend.

Cousin Mike,
We didn't know each other very well when we were young because you were so much older. But it was wonderful to finally get to know you later in years at Family Reunions and other family events when we got together at Christmas. What I admired about you so much was your gentle and focus listening when we would talk to you. You were quiet and always let us finish speaking and your responses were fabulous. I will miss you but know you are in the presence of the Lord and very happy.
Love you Mike

Heartfelt thoughts for the Tanner family. Mike was a very kind man, he always had time to chat with Floyd and I on our neighborhood walks. He often gifted us with delicious oranges.
He was a wonderful neighbor and will be missed .
When I walk today and his dog barks I greet him and remember Mike.

My condolences to the Tanner family. Mike Tanner left a lasting impression on myself and my entire family. I had the honor and the privilege to have been neighbors to Cathy and Mike for almost 20 years. Mike was a honest hardworking man, who never seemed to quit. He was a great friend, who would do anything for me and anything for anyone in need. His friendship to me and my family will be something that I will always have in remembrance of him. Rest in Peace my Friend.

Michael, Marcelo and I will miss you so much. I remember when we met I was young maybe 13 and you were my handsome cousin. I was so grateful to move into the central valley to settle down after moving all over following my husband in the Air Force. Getting to know you and visiting your Mom was a wonderful treasure. We love you and treasure our time with you. God bless you.
