Ann Calvello Obituary

Ann Calvello, a grand doyenne of roller derby whose outrageously dyed hair and brawling spirit made her a Bay Area icon, died Tuesday in a Peninsula hospital after a brief battle with cancer.

She was 76.

Calvello had been diagnosed with liver cancer just a week ago and had been given four to six months to live, said Bill Prieto, Calvello's life partner of 30 years.

"I'm just in shock. I don't know what to say," he said Tuesday night from the San Bruno home they shared. "She didn't even last a week."

Prieto said he took Calvello to the emergency room Tuesday after she complained of pain. She died about 3 p.m. at the hospital.

Calvello enjoyed fame as a star on the San Francisco Bay Bombers after helping introduce the rough-and-tumble spectator sport to the country decades ago. Calvello joined her first roller derby team in 1948 when she was only 18.

Her looks earned her the nickname "Banana Nose," and she quickly garnered a reputation as a bad girl because of her splashy clothing and hair color that ranged from purple to green and even polka dots.

Roller derby, a phenomenon that reached its zenith in the 1970s, matched teams of men and women on a banked-track oval where choreographed moves and knockdown brawls were the rule.

Calvello, who also skated professionally in Philadelphia and New Jersey, later was signed to the U.S. team and traveled throughout the world. She became an international legend, packing arenas and dazzling television audiences, at one point earning the moniker Roller Derby Queen. Calvello continued to entertain crowds even in her later years, skating in charity events well into her 60s. And her influence on the sport still looms large. Teams in a women-only league in Austin compete annually for the Calvello Cup.

Carol "Peanuts" Meyers Roman, a former member of the Bombers, remembered getting into a fight with her old teammate on the track. The fight continued in the dressing room.

"She came at me and grabbed me around the waist and head" and soon equipment was flying around the room, Roman said. Roman, who was soon to be married, got 17 stitches in her scalp.

The fiery Calvello, who always got the last word, labeled Roman "Frankenstein's bride." Then she volunteered to stand in for Roman as the bride.

She loved the give-and-take of roller derby and was always quick with a jibe, whether kidding about trackside broadcaster Walt Harris' toupee or Jerry Seltzer's attire, hanging the sobriquet of "Drip Dry" on the game's impresario.

"Annie would say, `Jerry, as much money as you have, you should buy a better suit than a drip and dry,' " Roman said. "That was Annie, she had a name for everybody." Roman said Calvello's unbridled wit and mouth kept Harris on his toes during interviews with her.

"It was hard for him to relax with Annie," she said. "He never knew what she was going to say."

Harris described Calvello as a larger-than-life figure worthy of a book. In 2001, Calvello was the subject of a biographical documentary, "Demon of the Derby." Ever the iconoclast, Calvello was something of a loner to her teammates outside the rink.

"I wasn't one of those who hung around the skaters," she told the Mercury News in February. "I'd go down to North Beach."

I just found out today that Ann had died. My heart is broken. Back in the 60's I skated minor league roller derby. I was so fancinated by her, and then in 64 I had the opportunity to skate with her in Hawaii because one of the skaters got injured. I was only 16 at the time so she kept her eyes on me while I traveled with all the skaters. I will always remember her. Thank you Ann for all of my memories

My heart broke when I heard of ANN CALVELLO leaving us! You see ANN CALVELLO was a great influence on my life! She was known as THE FIERY AND "UNPREDICTABLE" ANN CALVELLO." I send my prayers to the family with the words that ANN was an inspiration to me in my youth. I remember Walt Harris asking her "If she ever felt afraid?" ANN CALVELLO replied "You never feel afraid, because if you do "thats when you get hurt!"

There will never be another ANN CALVELLO! GOD BLESS AND THANK YOU ANN FOR YOUR STRENGTH AND DETERMINATION AND YOUR BEAUTIFUL FIVE STRIDES ON THE BANK TRACK OF LIFE!

My first memory of Ann Calvello was in 1965. My parents took my brother and I to this huge metal building in Los Angeles and inside was a rink "just like on TV"! My mother was such a fan and was so thrilled when my dad decided to take us to a "live" performance! My favorite was the Lady with the green hair and green fingernails in the Shamrock uniform, the one and ONLY ANN CALVELLO. At only 8 years old, I was totally in awe of this woman. I remember a man who was sitting in front of us stood up on his chair and booed her as she took down Terri Lynch. Suddenly, he fell through his chair and I thought, that's what you get for booing her! She was so fun to watch. That was over 40 years ago and I have to say, it was the MOST exciting live sporting event I have EVER been to! To her family, I am deeply saddened to hear of her passing, and my prayers are with you. Cherish your special memories. Somehow, I feel that roller skates will now be available at St. Peter's Gate! Rest in peace and may God Bless Ann and her family!

I was deeply saddened to learn of Ann Calvello’s recent passing. In 1972, as the editor of my high school newspaper in Denver, I was granted an interview by Ann. Like many, I was fascinated by her career and persona and she was very gracious with her time, affording me a cherished glimpse of the great lady beneath her irascible veneer. She was an original...an extraordinary woman whose likes we'll never see again. Rest in peace, Ann.

I remember watching Ann when I was in high school during the 70's. The SF Bay Bombers were the best.

I watched the Rollergurls episode with Ann and it was great seeing the reaction of the new roller derby queens to a legend. I was surprised to see the last show dedicated to her memory and finding out she had cancer and passed away. From now on when I hear thunder during a storm, I am sure it will be Ann flying around the ring in Heaven.

I only found out yesterday about Ann's passing and it was a moment in time for me to stop and reflect. I am 51 today but vividly remember as a teenager my attention and devotion to Roller Derby. My dad and I would attend the matches each time they came to our city and I can still see her leading the pack as only Ann could. A lady way ahead of her time. God bless you Ann. I am thankful that your suffering is over. We will always remember you and the thrills and excitement you provided us. Your spirit is in my heart forever.

I can't find the words to express my sorrow. It's been many, many years - too many - since I had heard anything about Ann and today I read of her passing on another website.

I was a teenager back in the late '60s when I first fell in love with Roller Derby and the derby gals.

I'm sure Ann and Joanie are watching and smiling, knowing all the love being felt for them.

We're going to miss you Ann ....

I remember as a young girl my dad a couple times a year would take me with him for a Daddy & daughter day out on the town. Well what that meant was he was going to take me to a Roller Derby game to watch him skate. My mom used to get me all dressed up and then we were off for our date.

The first time I met Ann, I remember she was already in her uniform and was on the track yelling at some lady in different uniform both on skates, Ann with this Pink and white hair, with a dark tan and white lipstick .I was scared to death of her! After the game had ended and they all got showered, my dad took me by the hand and walked me over to meet her, Just when my eyes started welling up with tears because I was so afraid to even be near her, My dad said, hey Ann I want you to meet my daughter Kelly, She bent down to get to my level I started to back up, and then Ann threw her arms around me and gave me the biggest hug and then took my face in her hand and said good thing you look like your beautiful mommy sweetie!

From that Day I remember every time it was Daddy and Daughter date day, I would ask my dad if we were going to be seeing The Lady With The Cotton Candy Hair.

Funny thing though, I have not thought of that day in many years.

Thanks for the memories Ann!

Hi all i'm Ann's nephew or as i would call her auntie niny.I would just like to express my love to everybody who is remembering my aunt and who will never forget her.Besides being my aunt i had a special bond with her cause i was born on her birthday Aug.1st 1980 51 years after hers.I always felt she was thrilled to share our day together. As for me as soon as i was old enough to realize how big she was and how many people lives she's touched i was simply honored to be able to share blood and being a leo and a Calvello.Thank you all for your support in these hard times, but as for me i'm going to celebrate the life she had rather than mourn the life she lost. All hail LEOS.

I'm sooooo sad of your passing but excited at the fact you will be reunited with your parents, Hazel, Mary, Angie, my mom and everyone else. Please be sure to give my dad hell...as I know you will. I was so saddened, to hear of Ann's passing. I remember watching her, with my Dad, when I was a small boy. I so, looked foward to seeing her! She was just so wild, exciting and entertaining to watch. I don't know whether my Dad got a bigger kick out of watching Derby or the small boy, giggling uncontrollably on the sofa next to him.

Still, with every passing, there is a beginning. The fire of her spirit now burns brightly in the hearts of hundreds, if not thousands, of young women who, have taken up her torch and know from whom, that spark was ignited.

We are all of us blessed, in no small way, by having been touched by her spirit. Let her family and friends take solace in the life she lived and just how many lives, she's influenced.

Good night Dear Friend, may you forever be, carved in the palm of God's hand and our hearts.

Growing up with wrestling and roller derby, we of course knew about the outrageous Ann Calvello. One day i was about 10 years old walking around in Westlake, and Ann comes out of a Woolworths with polka-dotted hair. She was way ahead of the curve on that style.

To be honest, i was pretty much afraid of her back in those days. She was a mean one, and almost always on the opposing team from the Bombers.

I met her a few years ago in Millbrae while she was on a work break. I walked up and introduced myself, and she insisted i was far too young to have remembered her. She and i spoke for a while, and she even spoke candidly to me about Joanie Weston, and how quickly she has passed from her illness. She was a super lady, and very nice to me.

Ann Calvello was a great woman. I shall miss her, and cherish the day i met her. Best wishes to her family, and condolences on their loss.
