Arthur Meade Obituary

Arthur E. Meade
Dec. 3, 1954-Mar. 23, 2017
Resident Of San Jose
Art passed suddenly on Thursday, March 23, 2017 at the age of 62.
Art was a popular teacher at Willow Glen High School and Middle School for 15 years where he taught Math, History, English, Science, and Photography. He was an excellent athlete in his day, playing baseball and lettering in basketball and golf at Del Mar High School, class of 1973. Art went on to play basketball at San Jose State University and eventually graduated with a bachelor's degree in Business Administration (Management) in 1978.
In 1978, he met the love of his life Susan while they worked at Breuner's Furniture Store. They were married on September 21, 1985 and were blessed with two sons, Benjamin and Stephen. Both boys became accomplished students and athletes under Art's warm care and watchful eye. He coached them in baseball & basketball and through many of their biggest life decisions. He was so very proud of them both.
Art was a walking sports encyclopedia and loved all sporting events, especially the Steelers, Lakers, and Yankees. He would attend the local little league games, high school games, and golf tournaments. He golfed at Pasatiempo (his favorite course), attended the Masters in 2007, saw his beloved Pittsburgh Steelers win Super Bowl XIV in Pasadena and Super Bowl XLIII in Tampa Bay, attended the SF Giants World Series and games during the Warriors 2015 Championship run, and watched the Cubs win the World Series! Art was also lucky enough to meet his all-time sports heroes Jerry West and Arnold Palmer.
Art is survived by his wife Susan, sons Benjamin (fiancée Alexia) and Stephen (girlfriend Angela), and sisters Beth and Sue Ellen.
In-laws: Margaret & Manuel Vasquez, Marlene Turner, Marissa Matusich-Kagle (Bob), Mario Vasquez (Sandy), John Vasquez (Mitch).
Nieces and Nephews: Janell (Rand), Jennifer, Eric, Madison, Jessica, Alison, Keaton, Matthew, Brendan, Kyra, Jae, and Madalynn.
Art is predeceased by his parents Ben and Glenna Meade, his sister Mary, and brother Kevin.
Art also leaves behind countless friends accumulated over more than 55 years living in San Jose.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, March 29th at 5pm at Darling Fischer Campbell Memorial Chapel. Funeral services will be held at the same location at 10am on Thursday, March 30th. Interment will follow at Los Gatos Memorial Park.
A scholarship has been established in Art's name at Willow Glen High School. Donations can be made to the Willow Glen Education Foundation; Check memo line: Art Meade Scholarship; Mail to: Willow Glen High School, 2001 Cottle Avenue, San Jose, CA 95125.

We are so sorry. We are praying for you and your family.

I had the opportunity to work with Art at Breuners in the 1970's. Art was always the go to guy to show us the ropes. Great times! Back then, our group was Art, Chuck Oeland, Nick Gutierrez, John Battiato, Jon Tesik and Al Chan. Art was always up on sports. There was a guy in the loading dock named Louie. Louie thought that he knew the local basketball scene and he and Art would bet on the games. I remember seeing Art's tally in the stockroom. There must have been 15 to 20 hashmarks indicating that Louie lost! Art really knew his stuff. My thoughts are with the Meade family during this tough time. I'll end with a quote from Hawkeye Pierce - Mash "Finest Kind"

Dear Susan
We were heartbroken to hear the news of Art's passing last week. Immediately our thoughts went to you, Benjamin and Stephen as many wonderful memories raced back into our minds. As I am sure with most people who met Art , in our minds he was truly one of the good guys. Lisha and I are further saddened that we are both out of town tomorrow and will miss Art's funeral. We want you to know, however, that among the many heavy hearts that will be there tonight and tomorrow, ours will be with you as well wishing you the strength and courage we know Art would want you to have. Our sincerest condolences.

I met Art back in 2002 when we coached our kids together in little league! Back then I admired his knowledge of the game and how well he worked with the kids. Always instructing and always being postitive. As I got to know him better and shared so many great times with him and Susan I began to realize just how awesome of a person he was and how much he loved his family. Art will always be remembered as an intelligent, fun loving and kind person and will always be in my thoughts!

Art was always gentle, kind, and loving. He always included me, as his cousin of the same age, when his family came to visit every summer (except when he and my brother David were playing baseball!). It's amazing that 11 kids + several other cousins could spend that much time together and not fight. Art's gentle and joyful nature was a big piece of that, and he continued that effect throughout his adult life. He is already sorely missed. Sending love and light to the whole family. I love you.

Art was an extremely generous, thoughtful, caring individual whose absence will be difficult to bear for the community, his friends and most of all his exceptional family. His words, smile, actions, examples, and legacy will continue though.
