I feel so lucky to have had you as a colleague at Westmont. You were always such a joy to be around-fun, kind, and full of energy. I really loved sharing classrooms with you and swapping stories and notes. You had such a special way of connecting with both students and teachers, and you truly inspired so many of us. We miss you more than words can say.

Dan is in my home, his ocean eyes and upward-bending smile held in place by a magnet on the refrigerator. Our laws of physics do not hold Dan anymore. I miss you friend.

Mr. Coonce was a wonderful teacher and such a kind spirit. I remember meeting him during his first year at Westmont and hearing all about his beloved Bella and the slideshow of their adventures. I couldn´t believe that he spent so much time just cycling through the world like that! As much as I hated math, I loved going to his class. I heard of his passing a months after and made me so sad to hear. All of a sudden all the times he made our class laugh and how many times he´d explain the same concepts to us and never got tired just replayed in my head. I always hoped I would go back and visit but almost 10 years later and life got in the way. I hope he had a wonderful last couple of years because he deserved it. He was too young at heart to have gone so soon. I hope he knew how much of an impact he´s made. He will never be forgotten.

In 1975 Danny was the first guy that I ever saw jump off the roof of the boys gym into the diving pool at Los Gatos high school.
It was that combination of daredevil and intellectual horsepower that made him such a unique guy
This is what sucks about getting older is losing all these people you grew up with.
There is another hole in the floor now that can never be filled.

Dan was a dynamic, engaging, and fun-loving teacher who my team had the pleasure of working with and learning from. His students and their success were always his focus. It was our honor and pleasure to know you, Dan Coonce.

Dan and I attended school together, k-12. At one point, Dan and I got into an altercation during school hours, and agreed to meet in the orchard across from Van meter elementary School after school and fight. By the time school ended, Dan had forgotten about the appointment, and I had to remind him. We went across to the orchard. We faced off. Dan asked," what are we fighting about?" We had both forgotten. We shook hands and went home. I recall Dan being like that: circumspect, practical, and kind. He told me once about his coaching philosophy, and he seemed genuinely interested in coaching the whole student, anticipating their future participation in society. Farewell, Dan! I'll always remember you; I'll always honor you.

I'll miss you, big brother... You blazed the trail ahead of us and lived life "According to Dan". As many of us were focusing on what was directly ahead, you would look at life's beauty and "stop to smell the roses". The world is a smaller place without you. I love you and miss you.
