David Kleinberg Obituary

David Howard Kleinberg
May 15, 1958 - April 5, 2012
Resident of Menlo Park
Entrepreneur and Silicon Valley executive Dave Kleinberg passed away on April 5, 2012 following a brave battle with lung cancer. Dave is survived by his two children, Elliot and Alexis, his parents Robert of Albuquerque, NM and Marcia Ross of Carlsbad, CA, and his two brothers, Steve and Bruce Kleinberg of Dallas, TX. Dave was born on May 15, 1958 in Lansing, Michigan, and grew up in Albuquerque, NM where he graduated from Highland High School. He attended Georgetown University and graduated in 1979 with a degree in English Literature and American Government, which kindled a lifelong interest in international business, politics, music and cultural affairs. He was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship upon graduation, and spent the following year at la Universidad de los Andes in Bogota, Colombia, where he studied Economics and became fluent in Spanish. Upon his return from Colombia, Dave entered the Stanford Graduate School of Business, where he graduated with an MBA in 1983. While at Stanford, Dave was instrumental in hosting a successful conference on economic development in emerging markets attended by business and political leaders from around the world. Dave spent his early years working in sales for ROLM in Tokyo, Japan, before returning to the U.S. where his career encompassed work for several pioneering companies of Silicon Valley. He joined Apple Computer where he headed up product marketing for the various Asian versions of the Macintosh and led the development of KanjiTalk, which dramatically accelerated Apple's growth in Japan. In 1989, Dave brought the same international acumen to Macromedia, and led the company's Pacific Rim Sales. In 1992, Dave fulfilled a long-time dream to embark on his first entrepreneurial venture by joining NetObjects as Co-Founder and EVP of Marketing and Sales. He helped take the company public in 1999 after its successful sale to IBM in 1997. In the last ten years, Dave has been the CEO of three successful start-ups. Dave was known for his keen intellect, strategic thinking, and persistence in developing great products. Dave was a devoted father to Elliot and Alexis (Lexi). He taught them how to read and shared his love for music with them, both in bands and casual jamming at home. He loved their family vacations and special times at the beach and in the mountains. Dave also loved cooking, eating out with friends, listening to and playing music, and spending time with his children. Dave's partner and confidante, Judy Maille, and her daughter Shayna provided Dave with much love and joy over the past five years. Dave will be missed by all those who knew him as a loving father, son, brother, partner or friend, enthusiastic cook, accomplished musician, and business leader. The celebration of Dave's life will be held 11:00 A.M. Thursday April 12, 2012 at Alta Mesa Funeral Home 695 Arastradero Road Palo Alto, CA. The family welcomes friends of Dave who would like to attend.

I sadly just learned about David's leaving us. While it is late, I said my thoughts and prayers to his children and loved ones. I didn't know David that well, but I could say with certainty he was one of the "good guys" I met in my journeys through Silicon Valley, he was a true Mensch!

Dave,

I can not believe you have left us. You were the Salsa King in our young years. I had never met anyone that danced like you. You were such a wonderful man and I am so proud to have known you. Thank you for all your love you gave our family. You were truly a brother to us. We are so sadden that you left us so early. Dave, you started the journey and one day we will follow.
See you then brother!

Our family is very saddened by the death of David. He was a member of the Gonzalez family for many years. David taught my son to play chess while visiting in Sinton, Texas. Years later I needed a job, and did not know how to work on a computer. David brought his apple to me, and taught me basics. Dave, we love you, and you touched our hearts depply.

David was a wonderful person who I was honored to know while we were at Stanford. We also were colleagues at Apple in the '80's. My prayers are with his family. His spirit is within all who knew him.

Dave was a great mentor for anyone who worked with him. A consummate professional and amazing problem solver. I learned so much from him in the short time that we worked together.

I knew Dave from Highland, where he was a mentor to many and had wisdom beyond his years. We lost touch but his many accomplishments in life come as no surprise given his many gifts. My condolences to his family.

I shared the sad news of Dave's death (via LinkedIn) with his former colleagues at Digital Impact. I thought I'd share a few of the comments back noting how much Dave will be missed along with condolences to friends and family.

Thank you for sharing this Kevin...but so sad to hear this news. He was a great guy & I have many great memories of working with Dave during my time at DI. My thoughts & Thoughts and prayers to Dave's family. Godspeed, Dave.

Sorry to hear this news. My sincere sympathies and prayers to David's family

One of my memories of David was the Halloween employee meeting when the senior staff all dressed as Dietre from Saturday Night Live. David was a good sport and was up there dressed in black and “happy as a little girl”. Sorry that he is gone.

Thank you for sharing, prayers to Dave's family and friends during this time. May his life be celebrated!

Even though I didn't work with him directly, since the company was small

I had met him several times during coffee breaks etc., May his soul rest in peace. I pray god to give his family the strength to bear this loss.

This is very sad news. I had the opportunity to get to know Dave a little bit outside of work. His son plays in the same rec basketball league as my boys and I'd run into him occasionally at games. He really enjoyed watching his son play. Rest in peace Dave. You will be missed.

Thank you for sharing Kevin. So sorry to hear this. I enjoyed working with him. Fugaro and I once made him laugh out loud when we started naming obscure Yankees and Red Sox players from the '70's. Great sense of humor and I learned quite a bit of marketing from him. He will be missed...

It is too soon. Dave will be missed.

Awesome person, great marketing mind, and of course, the best family man ever. God speed our friend.

So sorry to hear the news; I enjoyed my exchanges with Dave immensely. My thoughts and condolences to his family and friends.

This is such sad news. I had the pleasure of working with Dave and six others as NetObjects started up and grew to over 200 people. Dave was calm, cool, collected, and such a gentle soul with an endearing smile. I wish his parents, extended family, children, and partner and her daughter peace and light in this sad time. His spirit lives on forever, so I'll hold memories of him tight.

Dave had a good soul. He cared about his children and his work. His love of music and very inquisitive mind will be missed. Dave would often come east almost every summer and it would be great to see Elliott, Lexi and him. He wanted them to be with his cousins in New Jersey and experience New York. It was such as great gift for me to get to know his wonderful children. I will never forget the time that I was visiting in Menlo Park and he had Elliott play a song with him. His joy as a father in Elliott's skills and playing was a delight.

We have all lost a good person. I have lost a good, loyal friend. His positive spirit will always be with us...

Baruch Hashem, bless David's soul.
