Fiercely proud, quietly patriotic, a first generation Italian American born in the Bronx, NYC, and one of nine children of Maria and Anthony DiCoio. A WWII and nuclear veteran who marched with General Patton, reenlisted for the Korean Conflict, and helped restore communications in occupied Japan where he experienced unparalleled hospitality.
Eventually a 43 year employee of Western Electric (ATT), Dad found himself back in CA where he had the good fortune to meet and marry Florien O. Goetteman, the personification of genuine mid-western goodness that only a small Sauk Rapids, MN farming community could conjure. San Diego proved to be an idyllic home where they raised their two daughters, Marguerite and Joan, alongside other warmly remembered neighborhood families on Barclay Ave.
Always engaged and engaging, he was a mason, a shriner, an elder in the Presbyterian Church, a Telephone Pioneers volunteer, active Lucent Retiree, and the oldest "kid" on the block on roller skates! He was an avid reader of non-fiction (politics, history, science), periodicals, and journals who relished conversation, espresso, and comraderie at independent coffee establishments. Raised on opera and steeped in NYC arts, culture, and night-life, he and Florien became life long supporters of Public Television, Volunteers of the Year at Ch. 54 KTEH, San Jose and San Francisco Museum of Art members and partakers of art history docent led travel tours.
A resilient widower and bon vivant, Dad delved into photography classes at SJC including Phi Theta Kappa Honors Society membership, travel, and tripped the light fantastic with dear friend, companion, and photography professional, Coni Berliner. Their years together were fun and adventure filled. He will be missed by family, friends, neighbors, and Cats! - all with whom he spent many happy hours on the front patio deck.
He is survived by daughters Marguerite Poteet and Joan DiCoio, siblings Claire Casale and Tom DiCoio, grandchildren James Poteet and Jacqueline Poteet, son-in-law John Poteet, nephews Anthony diCoio, Lee DiTringo, Tom, Robert, John Casale, nieces Lisabeth Masters, Elisa diCoio, Lisa Casale, Marie Masters, and, "Smokey" the cat. He is preceded in death by his wife, beloved mother of his daughters, and homemaker, Florien DiCoio, and nephew, Robert Masters.

A celebration of Nick's life will be held March 9, 2013 at 3pm at the Toll House Hotel in Los Gatos.
