It is amazing how fast life seems to be going by as it has already been ten years since Tag has passed. We all miss and remember his presents in our lives.

I'd like to add a poem in his memory
Gene
A smooth passer
And not a bad fastball
A natural
Until he was broken
In so many places
That he couldn't use his grace
On any field
So he took on horses
And let them run for him
It wasn't the same
As completing a 30 yard pass
Or a neat strikeout
But when your horse is ahead
Running full out
You can forget everything

Tag was one of those people that everyone just gravitated to. He always could make me laugh. He was the embodiment of the word: "COOL"

Gean was a friend of ours later in life. I met him through my good friend Benny Muniz who was a partner of his in Newells Bar which I frequented quite often. He allways treated me good & gave me a lot of work on the side. I also became a partner of his in a horse they called Safeway Pat which he named after his wife. I can rememberhow happy we where when Safeway Pat got her first win for us. Like everyone else we will miss him. May he rest in peace.

Gene Tagliaferri was our leader and friend through grade school, high school, and junior college. A natural athlete, he looked as if he were performing effortlessly. As quarterback during Capuchino's golden years, he had the ability of a field general; he called the plays and found the strengths of each member of his team. He made better athletes of us all. Later in life, he told us that horses were the same as athletes; they were competitive, skilled, and motivated. But, "Most of all, Tag said, they had to have heart." To Pat and Rex and all your family, we know how much you will miss him. He will remain in all of our hearts.

I played against Tag in football and baseball in 1957 and 1958. He was always a fierce competitor, but a great guy. I was the other quarterback in that historic 68 to 45 football game at Jefferson High School. Some sportswriter did a 40 year anniversary story about that game. Tag came up to Jeff and we met and had our photos taken and all that crap for the story, but the thing I remember most about that day was how much Tag made me laugh with his stories and recollections about sports and life in general. Like everyone he touched in life... Tap will miss Tag. Paul Tapia, Santa Rosa

Gene Tag was my favorite tennis partner's and friend's dear husband. I always liked him because he called a "spade a spade" and was a loyal husband and father and provider. Gene was the real McCoy!! He always made me feel at home when I visited Pat. Sometimes he would cook in their kitchen or barbeque and always had wholesome good-tasting fresh food to offer me if it was around dinner time. {very Italian} He and Pat were always generous and gracious. Gene always reminded me of my father who also was very loyal, generous, and told it like it was!! He was worldly like my dad but stayed loyal to his family. I remember Gene and his tearful eyes at his dear son's Memorial and how he on the exterior didn't seem to show his emotions but dearly loved his two sons, wife, and family and was devastated to lose Rob, as we all were. I recall Rob and Gene frequently going into their hot tub together and I always thought how nice it was that they had that special time together as father and son. Longevity in his marriage and love for his family demonstrated his fine character and steadfastness in a world that no longer believes in commitment!! My heart goes out to his dear wife, my friend, Pat and Rex, and remaining family. My prayers are with you all. May Our Lord keep you and bring you peace in your time of sorrow.

Even in his youth Gene loomed larger than life. Back in our Little League days Gene and Jerry Scattini caught sight of the professional model infielder's glove I showed up with and immediately convinced me that I'd make a far better catcher than an infielder, and as long as I couldn't use an infielder's glove behind the plate, they'd gladly watch over it for me. And so I donned "the tools of ignorance and squatted behind the plate, and of course to ensure that it wasn't stolen while I was behind the plate, they watched over it by using the glove when I was behind the plate and I was happy to see them use it.
To me, Gene was always larger than life, and though we lost track of one another after my graduation and stint in the service, I followed his career throughout my time overseas.
To me he and Jerry will always be two super athletes that took the time to befriend a newcomer and make him feel welcome.
My only regret is the fact that after returning home from overseas I failed to contact him. In a way, in making me feel included and important, Gene helped mold the man I later became.

When I think of Capuchino High School and the Class of 58, Tag automatically comes to memory. He gave me many great memories with his wit, skills and athletic prowess. He will be missed in person, but will live with his classmates.

Gene was our de facto leader and one of the finest athletes to ever play on the Peninsula. He was not only a great physical athlete but a leader. When Tag ran the football team, you knocked yourself to succeed. I was on the field when his leg was broken and it still makes me sad to think of what it might have been.

Tag graduated from CAP as I became a freshman. Tag was in my brother Dan's class and I would attend the football games with my dad during his time at CAP. He was a hero to me at the time. Over the years I would run into him (especially later at his bar in Milbrae) and we would discuss baseball and Wally's career etc. He really liked my dad and my dad liked him. I used to not plan very well and occasionly, especialy early Sunday mornings, would stop in to cash a check as the bank was closed! I guess you could say he was my first ATM!!!! I have great memories of TAG and I will never forget him!! He was a nice guy. Mike Bunker
