Gene Upshaw Obituary

NEW YORK (AP) – Gene Upshaw, the Hall of Fame guard who as union head helped get NFL players free agency and the riches that came with it, has died. He was 63.

Upshaw's death was announced by the NFL Players Association, which he headed for a quarter century.

His outstanding 15-season playing career was entirely with the Oakland Raiders and included two Super Bowl wins and seven Pro Bowl appearances. Upshaw's biography was posted on the front page of the Hall of Fame Web site Thursday along with his enshrinement speech from 1987.

In 1983, he became executive director of the players' association and guided it through the 1987 strike that led to replacement football. By 1989, the players had a limited form of freedom, called Plan B, and in 1993, free agency and a salary cap were instituted.

Since then, the players have prospered so much that NFL owners recently opted out of the latest labor contract, which was negotiated two years ago by Upshaw and then-commissioner Paul Tagliabue.

Upshaw was criticized by some for not being tough enough in negotiations with Tagliabue, a close friend of the union head. He also was blamed by many older veterans for not dealing sufficiently with their health concerns.

But the salary cap for this season is $116 million and the players are making close to 60 percent of the 32 teams' total revenues, as specified in the 2006 agreement. In all, the players will be paid $4.5 billion this year, according to owners.

To The Upshaw Family: I am so sorry he is no longer here with us, but do know that he is still here with us in spirit. I pray that you all will be comforted by these words:

Try to remember that a GOOD man never dies; You will see him many times.
You will feel him in all things that are here out of love, and for love.
The person of a man may leave or be taken away, but the best part of a GOOD man stays. It stays FOREVER!

My condolences to the Upshaw family for the passing of Gene. He used to come into the law office where I worked in Berkeley back when a Raiders teammate of his was having legal troubles. He was always considerate, kind and gracious and as the team's player rep, he was conscientious about his efforts to assist his teammate's lawyers.

I knew Gene from the El Rancho in Santa Rosa when the Raiders had there training camp there. I worked the front desk and had, in some cases, the honor of getting to know some of the players. Gene was one of my favorites because he was a gentleman, friendly and a very kind person. My daughter has a happy memory of Gene picking her up and holding her over his head. She was very small so it was a thrill to be held up so high in the air. She used to ask me to take her back there on my days off just to see Gene and some of the other players who were so nice. I always felt I would get to see Gene again some day and am sorry for the world loosing such a nice man. Thelma (Miller) Rogers

To The Family of Gene,
My son was around 4 years of age and Gene was then living in Pleasanton California. We pulled up to a light and I realized we were stopped next to his silver and black bronco if I remember right. I asked my little boy if he knew who was in the truck beside us and he said no. I told him it was Gene and how great he was and if he would wave at him Gene would acknowledge him before the light turned green. Sam waved and Gene waved back!! Thanks Gene for taking the time to make a little boys day. Its been a long time and I still remember that day and the look on my sons face!!!! Just one moment of all the memories the family has to hold on to. Thanks for the opportunity to share this with you. It shows what kind of person he really was.

Terri, your husband, Eugene Upshaw and I were two of the players during the years of Texas A & I football in Kingsville. I had transferred to the college from U of H and was two years older. Eugene joined Coach Steinke's team
and we became supporters on the field and off. Being a married Senior, the team mates often visited our home to see our new baby girl and hang out. Gene was one of them. Eugene, as massive as he was at the time, enjoyed holding our new little daughter. My steps were into coaching/school administration/ministry and Eugene's into the pros/union. As we moved on, we enjoyed seeing his advancement and the focused work he was doing to make what he loved better for the players. Our heart goes out to you and his three sons. We only wish we would have visited with you in the last few years. May God be with you.

That was a neat story....weird how we are connected in someway to this man....one of my customers was coming over to pick up a trk...when I followed up the next day, turns out he was real close friend of Gene in college...he said he was so sad that he left work ..went home and totally forgot about our appt....he will be flying to California for the funeral...

I played ball one summer in Robstown while staying with my grandparents and taking a "typing class" at Robstown High. My grandfather made me practice every night on the antique Woodstock in his office. I played catcher, but they moved me to the outfield so that Marvin Upshaw, Eugene's "little brother" could catch. Marvin later caught Billy Cook at Trinity U. Eugene used to come out and watch us play and we would watch him lift weights in the gym. I thought I was pretty quick on the bases until Marvin challenged me to race around the bases. I beat him to first and when we rounded second all I could hear was #13 feet passing me and leaving me in the dust. I thought he would never stop laughing. Thanks for the memories. I am sorry we lost Gene.

I remember him from another place.

While you were in the Army Eugene "Tuck" Upshaw played for the Javelinas under Gil Stenke.

We would sit in the stands at kick off and yell "Field goal, Tuck". And he would promptly kick it thru the uprights wind or no wind. And that was before they moved the ball so far forward for kickoffs.

He was one of my students when I was a lab instructor.

You may or not remember this guys but we played against him in Jr High while at Memorial...they beat us 44-0....the thing I rememeber the most was Coach Billy Real(being from Robstown) went over to talk to them....came in and said,...'you guys are in trouble, they are built like Greek Gods"....never mind that he was right, sure did not make me want to go out there on the field and play them......Gene in 1958 hit a homerun off me in Laredo...that was the Robstown team that won the state championsip and fell one tourney short of going to the World Series....the home run actually hit the flag in centerfield as it was standing straight from a hard cross wind...remember it like it was yesterday...they beat us 14-0...members of that team was Larry Hans, Bob Ray Bissett, Richard Garza, Willie Deleon, Larry Sparkman, Romeo Garcia, Gary Smith, Mike Greenwell, Rene Gaza...been too long can't remember the rest...Coached by Rocky Garcia and O.B. Never had the pleasure of meeting him in person, but as a 40+ year Raider fan, I've watched him play, watched him as a player rep, etc. I've always admired him.

I'm sure you look at this from a more personal perspective (as any family would) but the number of entries in this guest book and the tributes being paid to him by friends and "foes" shows how highly people thought of him.

Mr. Upshaw wil forever have a place in my memories. People like me are lucky to have had even a small, impersonal exposure to him.

You have my deepest sympathy.
