John Unland

1953 - 2022

John Anthony Unland, beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away on November 29, 2022. He was born in 1953 in Minneapolis, Minnesota to John and Chestley Unland, and has been a Bay Area resident since he was a teenager. He married his high school sweetheart, Jane Pierson, in 1974 and together they raised two daughters while exemplifying a profoundly happy marriage. John graduated from San Jose State University and spent his career working in Silicon Valley for companies including Hewlett-Packard and Facebook. He was well traveled, with visits to nearly every continent on the globe. He loved new adventures and his hobbies included fitness, martial arts, travel, camping, hiking, reading, food and wine, planting and maintaining a vineyard, golf, and spending time with his friends and family. John will be remembered by his friends and family for his integrity, infectious laugh and humor, quick wit, inquisitive mind and mischievous, fun-loving nature. John is survived by his wife of 48 years, Jane; daughters, Wendy (Jeff) Swanson and Julie (Rob) Barrow; grandchildren, Abbey and Riley Swanson and Austin and Hunter Barrow; five sisters and two brothers.
