Joseph Melehan Obituary

Joseph Patrick Melehan 8/18/53-9/5/22The family of Joseph Melehan is heartbroken to announce his passing at Stanford Medical Center at the age of 69 on Labor Day. We honor his life, and no amount of time he was with us would have been enough. We were privileged to bear witness to his life, illness and death. He was married to his beloved wife, Celeste Martin Melehan for over 43 years, and together they enjoyed their marriage and life in Willow Glen. His precious children, Christopher Melehan and Julia Melehan Beaton also survive him, and he played an active role in their lives, showering them with unconditional love and support. He also leaves his daughter-in-law, Katherine Minor Melehan and his son-in-law Roberto Beaton III.In addition, he leaves 6 grandchildren in whose lives he was profoundly invested as their adored "Mamps". Other family members who cherish memories of him include his brothers, Jim and John Melehan, sister Maureen Melehan Machado, sisters-in-law Trish Melehan and Lisa Adamson, and brother-in-law John Machado. His extended family includes the O'Connells, Perruccis, and 8 nieces and nephews along with their spouses and children. In addition, he has numerous other relatives on both sides of the family. His parents were the late James Stock and Patricia Perrucci Melehan of Saratoga. His paternal great-great grandfather John Stock's family had arrived in San Jose, California in 1854 where they established The John Stock Sons Store and properties in downtown San Jose.Joe's maternal grandfather, JP Perrucci was founder of Mayfair Packing Co., a leader in the dried fruit industry when Santa Clara Valley was known as the "Valley of Hearts Delight".Joe was a graduate of St. Mary's Grammar School in Los Gatos, Bellarmine College Preparatory, and the University of Notre Dame. One of the highlights of those years was his sophomore year at ND when he studied at the Universidad de Anahuac in Mexico City. He enjoyed lifelong meaningful friendships from all of his schools. After he graduated from college in Indiana, he returned home to work in the family business. While that has evolved over the decades, he was still partners with family in many ventures until his passing.Joe was a committed volunteer and benefactor in the community for over 40 years. He is a past board member of Catholic Charities, TNT, History San Jose, and Preservation Action Council of San Jose, current Governor of the Board for Chaminade University in Hawaii, and a member of La Rinconada Country Club. He is a member of the California Pioneers, was a co-founder of the Fruit Cocktail Club, a member of the Presentation High School Parent Board, and helped coach his children's sports teams when they were young. He and his wife are parishioners at Transfiguration Parish. He was an unassuming but powerful role model to many. His wide-ranging passions included being an "Alfisti" (Alfa Romeo aficionado), a diehard Fighting Irish football fan, a proud schnauzer owner, a keen lifelong traveler and golf enthusiast. He was a medalist of both the Hunckler Trophy and the Father-Son tournament at La Rinconada. He preferred pencil and paper to computers, and file folders to the cloud. His family and friends will miss him, his patience, his tired jokes, loyalty, sense of humor, and the twinkle in his eye.The family is grateful for the medical and pastoral care he received at M.D. Anderson in Houston, Texas and Stanford Medical Center. In his memory, if you are able, consider registering for Bethematch.org. In lieu of flowers, donations in his name to either Bellarmine College Prep. (bcp.org)or Catholic Charities (ccscc.org) are greatly appreciated.A private committal service for family has been held. A Memorial mass will be held at Leontyne Chapel, Bellarmine College Prep. campus 960 W Hedding St. San Jose on Sunday October 9th at 11 am. Reception to follow at La Rinconada Country Club, Los Gatos.

I will always remember Joe with much love and appreciation for the kind, generous, outgoing gentleman he was. My heart goes out to Celeste, Chris, and Julia on this day of memory.

Celeste and family,
Yesterday I attended a reunion of Joe's class at Bellarmine. It was a small gathering at Campo di Bocce. I was made aware of Joe's passing. I apologize for being so late in adding my thoughts and prayers for you and your family. I was looking at a list of people who had passed in the class, with a few other people. I was surprised to see his name but also was very impressed by how others around me saw it and spoke so positively about him. Your high school friends know you the best and he was definitely loved and respected. Hug those grandchildren.

Dear Celeste and family: I was so sorry to hear of Joe's passing. Tom always enjoyed the Chaminade get-togethers which you were so gracious to host at your lovely home each June. Take comfort in the wonderful memories you have of him.

Just heard of Joe's passing. So sad!

I was with him his sophomore year in Mexico City, and we were roommates senior year. Joe (Jose), Tim Negro, and I were the "tres amigos", and tossed back many beers at Tenampa Bar (see picture); our favorite haunt. The other picture was taken last week during a family/friends trip to Mexico City.

Rest in peace Joe

Joe was a consummate gentleman and kind human being. My husband and I had the opportunity to travel with Joe and Celeste twice, and those will always be two of my happiest memories. For those of you who attended Julia´s wedding, perhaps you recall-as I do-the wonderfully sensitive and moving speech Joe made to toast the bridal couple. Joe´s warmth, humanity, and joy for life will always inspire me, as did his own love for his family and friends.

Joe was one of the kindest, warmest people I´ve ever known. Together with his beloved wife Celeste, Joe traveled with my husband Ted (now also deceased) and me down the Danube on a wonderful Christmas cruise. The four of us also went on a trip of a lifetime to Australia and New Zealand in 2018, and sharing time with them was a source of pure joy. I must also add that Joe gave a beautiful and touching tribute to his daughter Julia and her husband on their wedding day, and I was so moved by the depth of feeling in his words. I was proud to be counted among his friends, and I will remember him always with love.

I am so sorry to have learned of this untimely passing. As an Alfie Romero fan myself Joe and I spent hours talking about those damn good cars. We enjoyed talking about the SJ History Preservation as well.

I will be at his Celebration at La Riconada but due to a prior obligation I unfortunately cannot make it at Bellermine.

Heres to you mate!

How does one follow such a beautifully written tribute ? I could not say it big enough, loudly enough. Simply, I Loved my cousin Joe. Immensely. Our times spent since being babies, as our Moms carried us together, 9 months apart, were the absolute best, I'm sure we were plotting some fun even then when our Moms babysat us. My teens and twenties, were filled with the most fun adventures with Joe-from riding to Sears Point to spend time with Mario, countless cruising in the Alfa, parties, dancing, wearing our Notre Dame sweatshirts, and making mischief together in our desert years. Joe was easily the most geniune person one could know, always the most sincere hug of love. Never an unkind word about anyone through all our talks, not his style -forever a giving, humble, and unspoiled soul. I'll forever remember that reliable twinkle in his eyes, to his tear-filled ones, with support in losing my golden Dad. Joe was right there with that ever warm, loving heart of caring . My parents loved him much and every visit he brought to them. Later, realizing that we were now older, it only took one look at each other , that unspoken understanding, yeah, somewhere in there we are still those kids together. More recently, Joe told me he couldn't wait to get together again soon. I know we shall when we join with the greats that we grew up around, in that other realm, 'Til then, when we can share another adventure and smoke one more blueberry cigar together, I am grateful; lucky girl am I for every special moment with him, our treasured Joe, forever loved.

I haven´t seen Joe for many years, but we were classmates at ND. His amazing life story and legacy come at no surprise to those of us who knew him as a young man.
