Leonard Kesselman Obituary

Leonard Kesselman, 84, of Los Gatos passed away on August 13, 2023 eight days after sustaining head injuries from a fall at his home. He was surrounded by his family on his last day, along with one of his favorite lady friends, Janice, who made his last week happy.Leonard, fondly known as Leo, was born to Nathan & Zelda Kesselman on December 12, 1938 in Portland, OR. A graduate of Grant High School, the University of Oregon and the Hastings School of Law. Shortly after graduation, he moved his small family from San Francisco to Los Gatos. Leo practiced law as a criminal defense attorney for 15 years, got bored and retired at the age 38. He embarked on a new career in Television and Radio Station ownership. His first station was KFAT, which he ran with his new business partner, Laura Ellen Hopper. Together they founded KPIG in Freedom. Laura was his business partner until 2007, when she passed away. After that, Leo lost interest in broadcasting, selling off his various TV and Radio Stations, as well as his frequency licenses. Leonard was also a charasmatic, long-time fixture in Los Gatos. He loved attention and would ride around town in his crystal Bebe baseball cap. He loved the attention he got from that hat. For him, there was no such thing as bad attention. Leonard is survived by two daughters, Rachel (Ken) of Morgan Hill, and Sarah, of Los Gatos. He is also survived by his cat, Sparky, who slept with Leo every night, and misses him terribly.A celebration of life for Leonard will be held in the near future.

I was a good friend of Leo´s over the last 15 years & just shared a long phone call with him a few months ago, planning time to enjoy a nice one of our nice lunches. Oh Leo, I will miss you tremendously, and wish more than anything I should give you one more hug, covered in Sparky fur and all. Sending love and healing to your daughters and the rest of your family. Please let me know if a service is to be held, but perhaps I missed it...

I knew Leo from high school days here in Portland, where my debate team beat his in the state debate tournament, which he never forgave me for. He was one of my very best friends for all those years, and I got to work with him on his broadcasting projects, since I'm a consulting radio engineer, but we often just spent time together hashing over the troubles of the world. And I always stayed at his house whenever I was working in the south bay area. I didn't know he'd died a few months ago until I tried to call today to let him know I was likely to be doing some work in San Jose later this next month. I will miss him very much. He was one of the most intellectually honest and intelligent people I've ever known.

Leo was a great friend and always told me exactly what I didn't want to hear. I will miss his sharp wit, candor and loyalty. I am grateful for Leo's friendship and presence in my life.
