Lora Cartee Obituary

Lora Jean Gernreich Cartee
Aug. 15, 1929 - Aug. 9, 2013
Resident of San Jose, California
Lora Jean Gernreich Cartee died peacefully under Christian Science nursing care in Stockton, California on August 9, 2013. She was 83 years old.
Lora was born Aug. 15, 1929 in Los Angeles but lived most of her life in the San Francisco Bay Area. After graduating from Berkeley High School in 1947, she earned her BA degree with honors from the University of California, Berkeley in 1953 with a major in Classics. Lora worked her way through college at the Elwood Pharmacy on College Avenue in Berkeley while as a student at Cal.
Lora devoted her life to education and upon graduating from Cal Berkeley she began teaching in the Fremont Union High School District being one of the first teachers at the district's newly built Sunnyvale High School. Lora taught Latin and Ancient History at Sunnyvale High starting in September, 1955 and later transferring to Lynbrook High School in San Jose after her marriage to Tom Cartee of Sunnyvale in 1962. She often spent her summers traveling to Europe. Lora brought her experiences back to her classrooms bringing history to life for her students. She took early retirement in June, 1988. Lora was well regarded by her students and continued to keep in touch with them. She will be missed by her devoted students.
Although opera, travel and reading a good book were interests of Lora's, her passions were baseball and watching old movies on television. She continued to root for her beloved Oakland A's up until the day she passed on.
Lora was preceded in death by her father, George W. Gernreich, her mother, Ruth Gernreich Cave, and her sister, Georgia Pottol Bowden. Lora resided in San Jose from 1977 until she entered nursing care in 2012. Previously she and her former husband owned a home in Saratoga.
No services have been planned. Remembrances can be sent to The Tony LaRussa Animal Rescue Foundation (ARF), PO Box 30215, Walnut Creek, CA 94598 or a charity of your choice.

I had Ms. Cartee for Math in 1981 my freshman year. I loved having her. So much so that I took a Business Math elective course later with her as my teacher. She was wonderful. I have often thought about her and told stories to my own kids about her. RIP Ms. Cartee!! You had a huge influence on me.

Mrs Cartee was one the best teachers I had at Lynbrook. She made me think, she inspired, her class lessons stay with to this day. I remember her her fondly.

Mrs. Cartee was one of the best teachers I had. Yes, she was "tough"' but you always knew that she felt you were up for the challenge. You couldn't be lazy and succeed in her classes, but she was not lazy in them either.

Thank you for being tough. You helped mold us into the people we are today, Mrs. Cartee; people who know how to work hard. Because of your teaching, I appreciated and grew to love history.

Thank you for the humor and grace that you brought to our lives at Lynbrook. You taught us more than history, you taught us about life.

As a student at Lynbrook class of 1977, I recall with gratitude the opportunity to sit in Mrs. Cartee's class. I know the positive impact she had on me as a student. A group of us attending the recent megareunion at Lynbrook spoke quite fondly of her when we were remembering our favorites. She will continue to be remembered among the Lynbrook family. Thank you for the opportunity to add my condolences to the family here in the Guest Book.

I attended Lynbrook High and I'm sorry to hear of her passing. Although, I never had her as a Teacher, I heard many students talk about what a good teacher she was. RIP.

Mrs. Cartee was an excellent teacher. I had her in 1975-76. She was serious about her subject and bringing out the best in each of her students. She also had a sense of humor, high intelligence, and style. Rest in peace, Mrs. Cartee.

I am sorry I missed such a wonderful Teacher and person while attending Sunnyvale High. I also live in the Lynbrook District and attended the Jr. High that fed into Lynbrook High. I always admire Women like Ms. Cartee and again wish I would have had the opportunity to have met her. R.I.P.

Mrs. Cartee was one of the toughest teachers but one of the classiest people. She will always be remembered with great fondness by those of us who were so positively influenced by her example.

Mrs. Cartee made ancient history live in my mind, for which I have always been thankful. It was apparent that she loved teaching it.
