Melvin David Frank, a long-time resident of San Mateo, passed away peacefully at his home on July 3, 2017. He was born May 14, 1923 in Madison, Wisconsin to Elmer and Helen (Sweet) Frank. Mel spent most of his childhood in Los Angeles and graduated from Theodore Roosevelt High School. He enlisted and served in the U. S. Navy and was honorably discharged from flight school at the end of WWII. While attending San Jose State University, he met Jean Downey whom he married in 1948, shortly after graduation. After receiving a Master's degree from Stanford University, Mel taught and coached at Grossmont High School in San Diego before enrolling in UCSF School of Dentistry and graduating in 1957. He practiced dentistry for 26 years in Millbrae and served as a dental consultant at Delta Dental for more than 20 years. Mel was an avid supporter of youth athletics and was Founder and President of the San Mateo High School Booster Club for which he was inducted into the San Mateo High School Athletic Hall of Fame. He was also an active Mason, held several offices in the Millbrae Optomist Club and was an active member of the San Mateo County Dental Society and U.C. Dental Alumni Association.
Mel is survived by his daughters, Melinda Frank and Cheryl Frank Dutton; son-in-law, Michael Dutton; grandchildren, Ryan and Olivia Dutton; foster son, Roger Stone, and nephew, Jeffrey Lawton. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Frank; daughter, Susanne Frank; brother Joseph Frank; and sisters Ann Carmack, Esther Foster, Minnie Kusiak, Lillian Frank, and Sylvia Carter.
A service and reception celebrating Mel's life will be held at one o'clock on Saturday, July 29, 2017 in the Poplar Restaurant Ballroom at Poplar Creek Golf Course, 1700 Coyote Point Dr., San Mateo.
For those who desire, the family suggests memorial contributions be sent to Pathways Home Health and Hospice or any charity of your choice.
