Robert Amick Obituary

Robert "Bob" Amick Passed away Tuesday, November 17, 2009 at Sutter Amador Hospital in Jackson at the age of 61 years. He was born December 12, 1947 to Kimble and Barbara (Gilmore) Amick, raised in Sunnyvale and graduated from Sunnyvale High School in 1966. It was one of three communities in which he will never be forgotten. Bob was a beloved member of the "Buckaroos," a group of childhood friends from his hometown who still gather annually at Pine Mountain Lake. He was also part of "The Midnight Three," a folk group formed in his teenage years. From then until the end, Bob's special talent for guitar and song was cherished by all who heard him. After serving four years in the Navy stationed on the USS Coral Sea (1968-1972) and attending college (Foothill Community, University of San Francisco), Bob and his first wife, Christine Keegan Amick, raised their three children in Pleasanton from 1980 to 1999. Bob was active in the community, whether hosting float-building projects for the students of Amador Valley High School, coaching baseball and softball teams or acting as a mediator between teachers and parents during a contentious strike. His lifetime pass to all Amador Valley sporting events said everything about his local repute. He married Laurie on April 10, 1993 in Dublin, CA, and their wondrous final chapter in Jackson began soon thereafter. Bob lived by one of his favorite sayings in the Gold Country: "We don't quit playing because we grow old; we grow old because we quit playing." He played sweet music with Laurie, and their countless duets were enjoyed by the region's folks whether under steeples or in stables. He lived his dream of becoming a cowboy, becoming a regular at local round-ups and humbly learning the ways of the West from the dearest of friends. He is survived by his wife of 16 years, Laurie Amick of Jackson; daughters and sons-in-law, Kimberly Amick and Daniel Stahl of San Jose, Kelly and Bryan Hilton of Pleasanton; son and daughter-in-law, Samuel and Emily Amick of Elk Grove; brothers, Skip Amick and wife, Doris, Glenn Amick and wife, Debby, John Amick; sisters-in-law, Eileen Amick, Barbara Best and husband, Scott; grandchildren, Travis Chubb, Jackson Hilton, Hunter Hilton, Ryder Amick, and Landon Amick. Friends are invited to attend a celebration of life Friday, November 27 at 5:00 P.M. at St. Mark Lutheran Church (125 East Arques Avenue, Sunnyvale, CA 94085). Memorial contributions may be made to American Heart Association, 1212 West Robinhood Dr., #5D, Stockton, CA 95207. Condolences may be sent to the family via e-mail at [email protected].

I am reflecting back on my friendship with Bob - now my grandson and his grandson have a friendship and on occasion, I get to meet up with his son Sam as we live in the same community. I know Bob would be very proud of his family and on well they have done.

I miss Bob greatly - his last few years we had morning and late afternoon conversations while he was driving to or from work. We were closer at the end than at any point in our long history.

Thinking of you today and smiling ...

John, I just heard about your brother through my mom who lives in Pine Mountain Lake. I am so sorry for your loss. I think of you and your family often. Oh the fond memories!

I was very sorry to hear about Bob's untimely passing. But I was also very happy to hear from our mutual friend Bill McDonald that Bob had been able to achieve a lifelong dream of being a real cowboy, horse and all, up there in Northern California. Not all of us are able to achieve our dreams, but I'm very glad that Bob was. My memories of Bob are all very pleasant from earlier, more innocent times. I am glad I had the chance to be his friend.

I will miss you buddy! It has been a good long ride being your friend all these years.

We were once a part of a great folk singing trio - The Midnight Three - back from 1962-64! Memories flow back to those days.

I have said what I wanted to say to you this month on the phone with you - so I am thankful for those last couple of phone calls we had.

Your memorial services - one in Sutter Creek and the other in our home town of Sunnyvale were attended by over-flow crowds - people all wanted to come and say good-bye to you. You were greatly loved by so many people.

You were one of a kind - much like your own hero John Wayne. But he could never sing as good as you! You were the truly the singing cowboy!

You did well - raised a great family and served your country, your community and your church - what more could anyone have asked of you.

I am proud to have been your friend - you helped make me stronger in many ways. All our great conversations over the many years I will cherish them all.

So long for now ...

Bill McDonald

The past 50 plus years the Amick's have been part of our family. From race cars in Alviso to best friends who support my brother. Bob was to young to leave us but his memory and good times with him will always be remembered.
