Victor Zane Obituary

Victor Daniel Zane

Resident of Saratoga

Died at home early on Saturday morning, May 22. Born 6 January 1921, he is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Anne, his children Paul, Krista, and Gael, son-in-law Pat, grand-children Jeff, Wendy, Max, and Alex, great grandchildren Austin, Isabella, Eva Sierra, Jackson, and Ruby.

Vic, a well-known local artist, started his art career while in the Marines during WWII, providing paintings to Leatherneck Magazine. In 1976 his work was displayed in the Louvre as part of the "American Painters in Paris" exhibit. His subjects reflected his wide travels and many interests: marine, American West, Africa, Haiti, Caribbean, Mexico, and the Canadian Rockies. His last series of paintings were studies in ballet.

Vic enjoyed sailing throughout his life and he and Anne owned a wide variety of boats. Always interested in the American West, he was a horse-owning urban cowboy. In his early years he played trombone in a swing band, played several other instruments, as well, and was a guest tenor with the Detroit Metropolitan Opera.

Vic was an easily recognized figure on the streets of his beloved Saratoga, where he and Anne have lived for forty-seven years. He was loved by many and will be missed by all.

My mother and I met Vic when we lived in Cupertino. My mother June was a subject of one Victors work. They were great friends and Victor never painted a Native American woman till he met my mother. I enjoyed his spirit, and loved the visits we took to his home. I miss him every time I see this photo of mom. Unfortunately, she passed away in 1992, and I lost touch with the Zane family since her passing. If you´re reading this Zane family. I hope you´re living safe and sound out there. Blessing and take care.

I think of you often. You changed my life by introducing me to Dan one sunny morning in Saratoga while enjoying coffee with our mutual neighbors. May God bless you and keep you always in his view. Hugs

I moved out of town in 1999 but recently found myself thinking out Victor and our discussions at the Saratoga coffee shop. I met Victor after My wife & I, brother & his wife purchased the I.C.E. Coffee shop in Saratoga where you would find him most mornings. We became fast friends with him and enjoyed many conversations as well as outings on his boat in Santa Cruz. He really brought a lot of life to our business an knew most everyone who came in. After a visit to his home one day he brought me a signed print of my favorite painting of his which hangs on my wall to this day. I think of him often and I am sure he's telling his stories and loved by all up in heaven...

'bye, Dad. It seems like so much longer than a year since I've seen the twinkle in your eye or felt your hand pat mine. I think of you all the time and wish I could still share things with you. Forever, Dad. Love, K

I met Vic at the "coffee shop". He appraoched me openly and before I knew it, I was in his home admiring his art. In life we don't meet the strangers we pass, or sit next to in a coffe shop! Fortunately, I met Vic because of his open heart and love of conversation. Vic and I traded horse stories and he sent me on my travels with a signed print, that I will cherish for my entire life. Someday I can pass on the memory and the painting to my children. I send many blessings to Vics family!

I'll never forget the first day that I introduced myself to Vic and his group of friends. He put his arm around me and welcomed me to the"coffee shop" and that was the beginning of a most wonderful friendship that has lasted even though I moved to Florida. His big physique, didn't fit his gentle nature--he never had a bad thing to say about anyone! And what an artist! I am so glad he was an important part of my life--I will cherish the memories. My condolences go out to his loving wife Ann and his children. Bless him forever!
