Capt. William Alfred Stevenson (USN Ret.)

STEVENSON, William Alfred, Captain USN(Ret).-- age 90, entered into rest on March 24, 2002 in San Jose, California. Loving husband of the late Jean Stevenson (1974). Beloved father of Stuart Michael Stevenson and his wife Marie of San Jose, the late Peter Stevenson, David Stevenson and his wife Dianna of Smithfield, Australia and Victoria Van Hof of Lynwood, Washington. Grandfather of Christopher, Jessica, Valerie, Bret, Christiana and Stephen. Great-grandfather of Sophia, Dimitri, Ian and Finn.
Captain Stevenson was a 1934 graduate of the United States naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland and a career United States Naval Officer who retired in 1966. During WWII he served in the Pacific Theater as Executive Officer of the submarine USS Marlin and as Commanding Officer of the submarines USS S-30, USS Aspro and USS Cochino, which he commissioned. He earned the Navy Cross twice, several Silver Stars and numerous other awards and commendations. Following WWII Captain Stevenson served in a variety of line and staff positions with the US Navy, concluding his official career as US Naval Attache to Peru. Following his retirement, Captain Stevenson moved to Eugene, Oregon and entered private industry with Or-Met of Salem, Oregon and later as a consultant to the US Postal Service.
Captain Bill - as he was known to friends and shipmates - was truly an unassuming man who was very reluctant to discuss his exploits during WWII. He exemplified personal courage, integrity and utmost honesty throughout a long and distinguished career and will be sorely missed by family, friends and shipmates alike.
Friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service on Saturday, April 20, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. at DARLING-FISCHER CHAPEL OF THE HILLS MORTUARY, 615 N. Santa Cruz Avenue, Los Gatos (408)354-7740) Services with full Military honors will be held later at Arlington national Cemetery where Captain Stevenson will be inurned.
