Sandra (Helgemoe) Newberg, 58, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 1, 2024, at Essentia Health-St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth, surrounded by her loving family.
Born on November 30, 1966, to Jim and Ardis Helgemoe, Sandy grew up in Hermantown, where she graduated in 1985 before attending University of Wisconsin-River Falls. Sandy married Steve Newberg 25 years ago, embracing her role as a stepmother to his children, Tyler and Casey.
Together, they cherished their time at Lake Vermilion, enjoying fishing, snowmobiling, and the serene beauty of the lake. Summers were spent joyfully floating, boating, and sharing laughter with her sister-in-law, Susan, and brother-in-law, Ryan Severson, as well as a host of friends who frequently visited.
She was very involved in the Curl Mesabi curling club and her sorority Beta Sigma Psi, making numerous beloved friends in both groups. She spent a lot of time helping coordinate the youth curling team her granddaughter was a part of, along with a lot of other aspects of the club.
Sandy worked for Fresh Strategies as a territory sales manager and called on stores throughout the Northland and all the way to the border. She was well known and had a great repertoire with her customers and colleagues alike. She greatly enjoyed her job and they took wonderful care of her throughout the years.
Known for her generous spirit, Sandy was always ready to lend a helping hand, often putting others' needs before her own. Her warmth and kindness extended to her role as an aunt and, most cherished of all, as a grandmother to Natasha.
She eagerly anticipated the arrival of more grandchildren, a testament to her boundless love for family. One of her favorite activities was baking and hosting events. She knew how to put on a party like no other. From the food to the décor, she had a tablecloth for every occasion and no one could beat her baked goods.
Sandy was also a master quilter and crafter. Many of us are lucky enough to have quilts, and other handmade treasures from her.
Sandy is survived by her husband, Steve Newberg; mother, Ardis Helgemoe; stepson, Tyler Newberg; stepdaughter, Casey (Jake) Ferkul; granddaughter, Natasha Newberg; sister, Wendy (John) Donovan; brother, Bill (Angel) Helgemoe; nieces: Madeline, Hillary, and Katie Donovan, Chloe Helgemoe, and Mia Severson; and nephew, Wiley Helgemoe.
She was preceded in death by her father, Jim Helgemoe; brothers-in-law: Tim Donovan and Ryan Severson; and grandson, Cooper Ferkul.
Sandy's legacy of love, kindness, and resilience will forever be cherished by all who knew her.
Services will be held on Saturday, December 7, at 11 a.m. at Messiah Lutheran Church in Mountain Iron. A visitation will be held at 10 a.m. with a luncheon after the funeral in the fellowship hall. The burial will be private.
