Shirley Hertel Obituary

Shirley A. (Sue) Hertel

Shirley Ann Hertel, often known as "Sue," age 89, passed away peacefully on June 11, 2025, in the comfort of her home in Hibbing, Minn.

Sue was born on September 14, 1935, in Hibbing, to Erick & Taime Carlson. She graduated from Hibbing High School in 1953. Following high school, she moved to Denver, Colorado and then married Thomas "Hap" Hertel in the chapel at Lowry Air Force Base at Denver.

Sue and Hap lived in a variety of locations during his years of service in the U.S Air Force. In 1980 Hap became a Baptist pastor and Sue moved with him back to Hibbing, Minn. For the next 26 years Sue faithfully served alongside her husband at Calvary Baptist Church and then at New Hope Baptist Church in Hibbing. In 1996 Hap retired as a pastor and he and Sue became actively involved at Chisholm Baptist Church. Hap died in October, 2008, but as a widow Sue continued to faithfully serve the Lord Jesus and encourage many people around her. Sue enjoyed hobbies such as crafts and reading, but clearly the most important things in her life were faith, family, and friends.

Sue is survived by her son, Thomas (Kyunghee) Hertel and daughter, Terry Hertel; granddaughters, Kimberly Hertel, Lana McCoy, Erin (Scott) Garmaker, and Misty (Zemir) Husidic; great-grandchildren, Caden and Sophia McCoy; Ella Hindsley, Faith Major, Hannah, Thomas, and Olivia Garmaker; Sejla, Luca, and Isaiah Husidic.

Sue was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Thomas "Hap" Hertel (2008); daughter Wendy Hindsley (2023), son-in-law, Ronnie (2021).

A Memorial Service for Sue will be held at Chisholm Baptist Church, (5001 Cty. Hwy 5, Chisholm MN) on Wednesday, June 25, at 11:00 a.m. A visitation time will begin at 10:00 a.m.
