Richard Evans was a true great in music ... lately, at Berklee where he was a part of the young careers of Diana Krall and Hiromi, and so many students over 25 years or so; and, especially when he was based in Chicago, where he worked with legends such as Nina Simone, Nancy Wilson, Dianne Schuur, Dinah Washington, Buddy Rich, Stan Getz, James Moody, Chet Baker, Sonny Stitt, Woody Herman, Kenny Burrell, Paul Winter, Marcos Valle, Joao Gilberto, Tower of Power, Noel Pointer, and so many others.
He was known as a vital part of the great Chess Records/Cadet Records musical legacy, and as a contemporary, collaborator and colleague of Charles Stepney, Bruce Swedien, Ramsey Lewis, Ahmad Jamal, Dorothy Ashby, Marlena Shaw, Donny Hathaway, Curtis Mayfield, Eddie Harris, Terry Callier, Tom Washington, Phil Upchurch, Maurice White, Sun Ra, and others.
Of course, Richard's work with The Soulful Strings, and as a Producer on the records that launched the careers of Natalie Cole and Peabo Bryson are part of history. He even told me he recommended Chaka Khan for her first job -- singing on a singer; and, that he even had the chance to sit in on bass with Billie Holiday.
My … WHAT A STAGGERING LEGACY! There will be no more men like Richard Evans; and, we all should stop and recognize that poignant thought.
Richard was a contemporary of my mother and uncles in Chicago (the Hamptons, from the Princeton Park community). They tried to connect us when I was a teenage bass player in the early-1970s. But, I was not ready. It was only in recent years that I had the chance to connect with him, and to fully appreciate the greatness of the man. He graciously agreed to become a sort of mentor, advisor, and touchstone for me -- 35 years after it was first recommended to me. I missed so much ... but, Mr. Evans gave me just enough to take forward.
I honor Richard Evans' many achievements -- they are in the annals of music history. And, I respect the path he traveled in his 80 or so years on earth.
Well done Mr. Evans. Thank you.
Rest in Peace sir.
God bless to the family ...
All the best.
Robert Hebert
