Carl Dammeyer Obituary

QUINCY - Carl Alvin Dammeyer, 79, of Quincy, Ohio, passed away peacefully at home on February 21, 2023.

He was born at home on March 13, 1943, in New Knoxville, Ohio to the late Wilfred and Adella (Schrolucke) Dammeyer. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Larry Dammeyer, and a granddaughter, Megan Karus.

On November 17, 1961, he married Sandra (Bell) in Sidney, Ohio, at St. Paul's United Church of Christ, and she survives.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, along with their five children: Dave (Tina) Dammeyer, Cheryl Dammeyer and friend Mike, Vickie (Mick) Anderson, Lori Longbrake, and Darrell (Lori) Dammeyer; 12 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He leaves behind many special friends.

He is also survived by a brother, Gene (Judy) Dammeyer of Florida, and a sister, Joyce (Tony) Shultz, also of Florida.

Carl started his working career as a dairy farmer for a number of years, then moved on to ditching and putting in farm drainage. He enjoyed being outside and on the farm. After that, he decided to try truck driving and went to work for Super Foods working nights. From there he worked for Slagles in Sidney, Ohio and made many friends while there. He started his own business (Dammeyer Excavating) and dug many ponds, footers, and helped the local Amish community get a start on their new properties. He created many loyal friendships along the way. He often spoke of how he would take a bag of candy along and the children would run to him and line up to get their piece of candy, each one thanking him.

His love of old barns led him to his next adventure called "The Barn Source". He took down old barns and salvaged the beams and wood for customers all over. This was his way of preserving the barns he loved. He built a barn of his own on his property which was amazing and showed the talent he clearly had. A business was started there called "Country at Heart", which sold antiques and crafts of all kinds.

Carl was a dedicated Miami Township Trustee for 23 years. He was loyal to his job there mowing ditches, plowing snow, repairing roads and the equipment.

He loved to sit and drink coffee and talk in the mornings before work at Linda's Restaurant and The DeGraff Creamery. He also loved going to antique shops, auctions, festivals, and antique tractor shows. He was good at woodworking and enjoyed making things for others, and also landscaping. Spending time with family, especially during the holidays, along with watching sports, and John Wayne movies was also what he enjoyed.

He started a men's softball team called "CL&W", in Quincy, Ohio, and also "The Pub" in Sidney, Ohio. He and his wife enjoyed the games and the families as they also became like family.

Visitation will be from 2-3:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 2, 2023, at the Daring & Sanford Funeral Home, 210 W. Hayes Street in DeGraff, where Pastor Michael Mitchell will officiate a memorial service at 3:30 p.m. Burial will be in Cedar Point Cemetery in Pasco, Ohio at the convenience of the family. It is requested that guests in attendance wear casual or University of Michigan attire. Any fond memories or stories you have about Carl would be appreciated.

The family would like to thank Wilson Home Health and Hospice, 1083 Fairington Drive, Sidney, Ohio 45365 and My Love of Care Home Health Care, 104 S. Carlisle Street, P.O. Box 225, Quincy, Ohio 43343. Memorial contributions made to these organizations are appreciated. Also, many thanks to the people who stopped to visit and love on Carl during his last few years. He was a great husband, and a loving father and grandfather. He will be missed dearly and loved forever.
