James Barry Obituary

James Dee Barry
James Dee Barry, 95, of Portland, CT, beloved husband of the late Dorothy (Tremblay) Barry, passed peacefully on Tuesday, 12/23/25. Known as either "Jim" or "Dee" by friends and family, Dee was born in Middletown to the late James E. and Gertrude Dee Barry. He attended St. John's Elementary School and graduation from Vinal Technical High School in Middletown, CT. After high school, Dee enlisted as a Navy Reservist.
Prior to his retirement, Dee spent his entire career as a Chevrolet mechanic, working at many dealerships and ending his career as a mechanic for the Town of Portland.
Dee was always there for everyone, no matter the time of day. He loved to chat and joke around with people; and as an Irishman, he also loved a good party. Every day Dee walked down to the Portland boat yards to collect cans and bottles, and would donate the bottle return money to cancer charities. While collecting cans and bottles, Dee loved to talk with all the patrons and workers at the boat yard. That made his day, and his family would hear all about his morning adventures later that day.
Dee is survived by his children Nancy Asci of FL, Robert Barry and his girlfriend Mary Collins of New Hampshire, Michael Barry of CT/NH, and Susan O'Leary and her husband Kevin of Middletown; four grandchildren Matthew Picard and his wife Liz, Patrick O'Leary, Megan O'Leary, and Jason O'Leary and his wife Abby; three great-grandchildren Connor, Hunter, and Skylar Picard, along with another great-grandson, Oliver O'Leary, due in a few months to Jason and Abby. He is also survived by many nephews, nieces, great nephews and nieces, and their families. Dee was especially close with his niece Ann and her husband Jeff Wallace of Portland. He was predeceased by his son-in-law William Asci.
Dee was devastated after the loss of his wife Dottie. Many years after her death, he met Claire Narus at church and fell in love. They enjoyed many happy years together until her passing in 2020.
Dee was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Irish American Home, and was a very faithful member of the Church of St. Mary in Portland. He absolutely loved the Saturday night dinners with a group of parishioners. Dee lived his life to the fullest and had always enjoyed swimming, motorcycling, snowmobiling, waterskiing, and spending time with his family and friends.
The funeral will be held on Tuesday, December 30th at 9 a.m. from the Portland Memorial Funeral Home, 231 Main St., Portland, followed by a Mass of Christian burial in St. Mary's Church, Portland at 10 a.m. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Portland. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday, December 29th from 4 to 6 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Dee's honor to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or the Ladies Guild of the Church of St. Mary.

Nancy, Robert, Michael & Sue,
I am so sorry to hear of Jim's passing. He was the sweetest, kindest person. Always had a smile on his face whether I met him at the dental, church or Tri-Town/Adam's. Take comfort in his love for you, as he loved to fill me in on all of you when I met him in town. I hope the new year helps you find peace & comfort as you look for his signals. A star as bright as Jim can never be extinguished. God bless-

We are heartbroken to learn of Dee´s passing! Living next door for the past 23 years, he has watched our kids grow up, spent many summers talking over the vegetables from the gardens, and just enjoying each other´s company. Dee was more then a neighbor, he was a friend and a legacy that won´t be forgotten- we will miss you

Jim was such a sweet man and will be missed dearly. Jim would always stop by my parents house everyday on his walk and give the dogs a treat and chit chat with us. He would stop by my work every day at Birdon Marina to collect cans and have a nice chat with everyone. We loved his daily visits and all his stories. My thoughts and prayers are with all of his family.

My sincerest sympathy goes out to the Barry family at this sad time. I am so grateful to have had the gift of chatting with Jim at Birdon Marina. He always had a kind smile, gentle wit, and a story to share. He was gracious in his service to others. He was as sure a part of most days there, as the CT River. He will be sincerely missed.

A few years back, a neighbor might have told Mr Dee that I had a bicycle accident and was home recuperating. I didn´t even know his name at that point. The next thing I recall, he had bags of groceries at my door. I asked why and what was that about. From this first meeting and for next couple of glorious months and years, Mr Dee and I became the 2 best neighbors you can find anywhere.
He got to know more of me and I managed to get into his home numerous times. I introduced countless visiting family members to Jimmy; and in all cases appeared as if he´d known them all along.
He texted like a teen and never failed to respond to my many, many messages.
His quest for knowledge and information was the catalyst that led to our hours and hours of conversation. His sense of humor was unmatched and always spontaneous. He knew about everything in our town and was my unquenchable source of Portland history.
I have no idea how I´m going to cope with neighborhood life, on my return home from where I´m right now.
Regardless, I´m a much better person with the infusion of Jimmy´s nature into mine. I loved him so dearly and will miss him immensely.

Always know as MR Barry to me I lived across the street from him for years. He was always willing to give advice or a helping hand when needed. Even my dog koda knew what he drove and would watch for him to get home he was not allowed to go inside until she got a pat on the head and a dog bone. He will be missed by many. My father passed away in 2000. I was so blessed to have another father through Dee (dad). We ventured out on many mornings to the boatyard to pick up cans and bottles. I was his "assistant in training". I loved our walks and talks together. He filled the void for me and I will always be thankful for his presence in my life, forever my second Dad!
